Market Friday: visiting my friend’ shop, ไปเยี่ยมร้านของเพื่อน

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the kind and compassionate @dswigle. Last week I dropped by my old friend’ shop at Amarin Plaza to see how her small souvenir shop was doing these days.

My friend’ shop is on the third floor of Amarin Plaza selling souvenirs and odd items which people might want to bring as gifts from Thailand. I am always amazed how she could manage to cram all the items into her small shop. The good thing about shopping around this area is that prices are reasonable and vendors often give special reduction to customers who buy several items.

สัปดาห์ก่อนเราแวะไปเยี่ยมเพื่อนที่มีร้านขายของที่อัมรินทร์พลาซ่า เราไม่ได้แวะไปที่นั่นนานแล้ว ร้านอยู่ชั้นสามเป็นห้องเล็กๆ ขายของที่ระลึกและของฝาก สำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวนำไปฝากเพื่อนฝูง เราแปลกใจที่เพื่อนเราจัดร้านเก่งมาก สามารถเอาของจิปาถะชิ้นเล็กชิ้นใหญ่ ไปจัดบนชั้นได้อย่างลงตัว เขาคิดหาของมาวางขายมากมาย บางอย่างเราไม่คิดว่าจะขายได้ แต่เขาก็สามารถขายของไปได้เรื่อยๆ. เพื่อเลี้ยงดูลูกสาวตัวเล็กๆสองคน

Nowadays there seems to be less tourists and customers around this shopping area. Several shop owners have not renewed their rental contracts as the rent has gone up while the sale receipts have become lowered. So, there are several empty shops for rent. I am a bit concerned for my friend and other shop owners who have been here for over ten years. Things are going to change drastically in the near future; these people hardly know anything about cashless society, digital money and cryptocurrency. Besides, complex socio-political problems in Thailand, international financial troubles can impact us all in a matter of months. So, I just try to warn some about possible financial crisis next year. But I hope and pray that we would have a lucky escape and that things would be mitigated.

This is just opposite my friend’ shop.

ตอนนี้ที่นี่ก็ค่อนข้างเงียบ มีนักท่องเที่ยวและลูกค้าน้อยลง หลายร้านไม่ต่อสัญญาเช่าที่ เพราะค่าเช่าสูงมาก แต่ยอดขายตกลงมาก เราก็อดเป็นห่วงเจ้าของร้านเล็กๆไม่ได้ พวกเขาขายกันมานานกว่าสิบปี จนทุกคนรู้จักกัน ช่วยกันดูแลร้านและขายของให้กัน คนเหล่านี้ไม่รู้ว่าสังคมไร้เงินสด คริปโตคืออะไร เราก็หวังว่าปัญหาเศรษฐกิจและการเมือง ตลอดจนปัญหาหนี้ท่วมรัฐบาลอเมริกันและสงครามการค้าคงจะผ่อนหนักเป็นเบา และคลี่คลายไปในทางที่ดีขึ้น
