Steem Earnings Down As of Late

As we all know the price of Steem has been somewhat disappointing over the last couple of weeks. Despite continued interest in blockchain and cryptocurrencies in the market, Steem continues to underperform and has fallen into the Top 75-100 position in market capitalization. While these metrics do not really phase me given my long-term considerations of the potential and value creation we are seeing, it is truly the first impression that many thinking about joining come to see which may impact the manner of which they join if they even decide to do so. In addition, we have seen that this has had a direct impact, as it is designed, towards earnings.

The earnings we accumulate here in the ecosystem are coded to be in our native cryptocurrency, Steem and Steem Backed Dollar (SBD). Aside from the considerations of the Steem Engine market and the impact they have had, stress has caused declines in the markets that has made this change a bit since we are no longer earning as BSD. However, we continue to earn as long as the blocked continued to be mined every 3 seconds. Therefore, earnings potential is directly correlated with the price of our cryptocurrencies. This is yet another reason why engagement correlates so much with price. However, those seeking to accumulate more Steem should look past that and take the opportunity to actually accumulate more.

However, as I have peeking over to see my earnings I am starting to think that there is something more that is dropping earnings. I believe so because while the price of Steem has been down by about 50% over the last couple of weeks, my earnings seem to be down much more than that. Before I give my thoughts as to why, I want to emphasize that earnings for me is not the most important metric I track towards my goals; I believe that engagement should be the goal or metric that we track in order to measure our progress. Interestingly, these earnings continue to represent more Steem and Steem Power than the past given the way the protocol works.

Personally, I have adjusted the amount of engagement over the last couple of months due to a number of reasons. First, I had an awesome family vacation there reminded me that nothing is more valuable than memories and experiences with the ones I love the most. Second, there has definitely been a lot happening in my professional career that has needed my attention in order to make my future investments possible. Lastly, the overall drop in engagement is impacting me as I no longer find as much content to curate as I did before. Therefore, I realize that for me the number one driver of rewards for earnings is the fact that I am engaging less. While this has reasons to be and was planned, I think that I can still do a better job and find ways to continually engage and grow my presence around the ecosystem and community.

This is a very important consideration as I still recall my early days here when my posts were barely receiving five cents worth of earnings. It was my comments and engagement through the content of other creators that provided me a way to not only earn through the words but also demonstrate my presence in value as a curator. I believe that during my first six months on the platform, I earned multiples more for comments because of engaging when compared to the actual content I created in posts. I believe that this opportunity continues to exist today as the amount of community members engaging on posts has substantially been reduced. Given the reduction, there is more opportunity to be heard and seen, which could lead to not only upvotes but also new followers.

The last thought I’ve been having regarding the declines in earnings is the fact that Hard Fork 21 is approaching. This change may lead for many community members to pause many of their curating efforts in order to prepare for the upcoming changes regarding how earnings will be distributed. Many are preparing to go into the new forked chain having the most Resource Credits and Voting Power available in order to leverage them at the beginning of the change. Therefore, my thought is that the decrease in engagement and distribution of earnings is also down due to this.

These changes are somewhat disappointing as they do not foster continued growth with in the community which is the source of value creation over time. However, it also brings opportunities for those that remain engaged to capture a bigger piece of the pie. Unfortunately, the focus should hopefully switch over to making the pie bigger instead. While I remain personally uncertain if the changes of Hard Fork 21 to have the effects of doing so, I am looking forward to a shake up in order for the community to figure out what is the best way to reward content going forward. Like in many aspects of life, adopting is the key to achieving long-term sustainability and success.

I've learned my lesson the first time I bailed on Steem. Not again. I will continue to write, play Steem monsters, create, share, help, promote and engage even if steem drops all the way down to a penny. I don't know if HF21 will do anything major, but I do think that Steem is still in its younger years and will find a way to solve the problems and obscurity that is holding it down.

I took a look at your affiliate links. Nothing there for me right not (that I don't already have) I did jot down your discord handle though. I want to connect to people outside of steem too. seems like a good place to start.

Remain engaged and present! The Steem eventually accumulates and makes for a great stake with flexibility and experiences worth the while! Change is good!

Shaken not stirred steem!

I agree that engagement is critical and when I first started it was the only hope I had of having any interaction. I have been a top engager since my arrival here even placing in the top 5 in Asher's league once. Lately though, if I feel compelled to comment it's often not reciprocated and I'm not talking about my brutally honest offerings that can get me muted for being truthful. I'm speaking on the overall apathy of the small percentage of active steemians that now seem to be demotivated. As a user that never even valued earnings here it's obvious that many are showing their true colours by allowing the price to dictate their overall sentiment. It's only natural and it's quite easy to deduce the Hf will not be promoting any interaction. The prelude to that is evident in the dwindling support of the comments section. As a powering down organically grown minnow I'm not seeing much of any reason to believe I have any reason to continue to dwell here. In fact I only reached minnowhood on the support of one whale all the dolphins and minnows are too impotent and fledgling in their numbers to foster new growth. Steem is a long way from thriving or having any outside appeal, that's just the reality that seems crystal clear to me, someone not at all monetarily or emotionally invested in this platform. The stats seem to agree with me. 20 cents abysmal retention, and headed to the bottom of the top 100 while still working out the kinks with yet another Hf after over 3 years of mostly dropping the ball. Not being listed on coinbase is all any serious crypto enthusiast needs to see before moving on. If by chance they google steem they'll find a treasure trove of well deserved bad press that often includes key words such as scam or ponzi.

I never was into the social networking aspect before Steem but the experience has allowed me to enjoy the journey. The reality is that what I gain from knowledge and the crypto here is 100% more I will anywhere else! I know I am biased given the time and resources invested here, I remain committed as I have learned the value of my attention and I will not be willing to give it for free again to centralized platforms. This still have a chance to improve and at worst the development of Dapps will continue to expand our experiences here as I am finding with some projects like @actifit and @steemmonsters. Thanks for your candid thoughts and engagement! We surely need more like you around!

Hey, @newageinv.

The earnings we accumulate here in the ecosystem are coded to be in our native cryptocurrency, Steem and Steem Backed Dollar (SBD).

So, I know what you're going for here, STEEM and SP are similar as far as STEEM is concerned, so I hope you don't mind me getting a little nitpicky about this, especially since you mentioned the fact that we are getting STEEM now instead of SBD.

However, we don't really get liquid STEEM until the SBD debt ratio gets above 9% and close to 10%. We get SP. And while I guess that be looked at as interchangeable, when SP takes 13 weeks to liquify, I just have to make note of it.

Especially since I was thinking about a post at some point that would talk about the tokens on STEEM-Engine and how even if they do have aspects of HF21's EIP in them, there's a crucial difference, I think, that's playing out there.

You don't PALP, or CCCP. You get PAL or CCC. They're transacting in the actual token, not in a debt instrument and staked tokens. That, for me, makes things much more interesting.

re: cause of less earnings

I guess all of the above works. Lowered engagement, lowered curation, lowered eyeballs, lowered participation.

At the same time, though, the earnings we are getting are much larger than we would otherwise get if the value of STEEM were higher. So, I don't know. I've been looking at it as a great time to earn and invest in STEEM. I just need to have some fiat to do it with. :)

Thanks for the insights! The tokens from Steem Engine have surely added an additional layer and is another reason why I am somewhat welcoming this opportunity to accumulate more as the underlying fuel of the Engine is Steem. I think I read that now over 300k Steem is lockup on Steem Engine just because of the deployments of Tribes and Tokens. This is less Steem to go around in the long term.

I haven't been engaging as much as well. Been busy with other things but I have tried to remain active by posting regularly.

I think my earning has only changed slightly so I'm not perturbed about that.

About preparing for the next hard fork. I'm currently biding and trying my best to maximize my earning. This us the first time I haven't withdrawn my steem for over 2-3 weeks and I'm hoping to reach the 2k steam power mark on or before the next hard fork

Your growth has been amazing buddy! I have been privileged to watch it and it encourages on what can ultimately be done here for many others. I am sure we will all find ways to adapt to the changes and Steem on!

Right now I stopped most of my curation on steem. I focus my attention toward the SteemLeo tribe and upvote at 100% the posts I find interesting.

Posted using Partiko Android

SteemLeo is definitely exciting as it is what I originally envisioned for my content here on Steem. While it has taken some deviations, I ultimately hope to focus on the investment side.

I think that a lot of people are focusing on their tribes as well and voting with different accounts. I see a lot of users who are only voting through their sports account now on my sports posts. These might have plenty sports power but no STEEM power behind them.

It will be interesting to see how sustainable that is as Steem Power continues to be the underlying fuel of it all; including Steem Engine itself.

When you stated BSD, I’m assuming you meant to type - SBD ? Also, what site do you find your daily earnings in curation and author awards? I would like to take a look specifically at this for my growth over time.

Could you possibly expand more on the implications which may arise from hard fork 21 ?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts, newage 🙌🏼

Yes, SBD! You are definitely in for a treat if you have never been to SteemWorld by @steemchiller! The best site to keep up to date on your Steem account! Yours would be steemworld.org/@conradsuperb

Enjoy!

HF21 will be changing the earnings to a 50/50 split between author and curator vs 75/25 today. It will also change the curve of which your weight impacts the value of the vote. A lot of technical details that I am just waiting to see how it plays out to be truthful.

Ah ha ! Awesome, surprised I hadn’t previously heard of steemworld

I see. Better take advantage while we can of these solid opportunities for steem and SP growth. Is there a tentative timeframe on when HF21 is set to implement ?
