Dog Troubles in Our Car

in #busy5 years ago

Although I don't travel much, the chances are I still occasionally need to take my "Sky" out in a car ride from place to place.

"Sky" was re-homed at age of 5 months old as her previous owner fell ill and wasn't able to look after her any more. It took us one and a half hours to take "Sky" home due to the terrible traffic. This was her first ever car ride and unfortunately it was not a pleasant one for her as "Sky" looked very stressed, panting and breathing heavily. At one point, she even puked out some carrots that she ate earlier!

Ever since, we tried to take "Sky" for short trips with an aim to get her used to the car ride. She is getting better but still shows a bit of anxiousness whenever she gets in a car. She would not sit nicely but likes to stand instead. As we put the car cover, it is difficult to put the seat belt around her. So I would be holding her the entire time at the back seat, lol. Hopefully over time "Sky" will get use to the car.

One trick I recommend ... as often as possible, drive Sky to the dog park. She will quickly associate the car with the awesomeness of the dog park. That should quickly decrease the anxiety.

When I was growing up, the veterinarian was about a 20 minute car ride, whereas the cottage was a 2 hour car ride. For her whole life, the first 30 minutes of the car ride were stressful for her. After the 30 minute mark, she would love the remainder of the ride.

Thank you so much for the tip. That makes total sense, lol.
