The Japanese scientist says that Ukrainians are the majority of the population of The Northern Kuriles

Almost 60% of the population of the occupied Soviet Union, and then Russia of the Japanese Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomayu — can make Ukrainians who were forcibly resettled here by the Soviet authorities after the occupation of the Islands in 1945.

This was reported by Professor from the University of Kobe Gakuin (Japan), a foreign expert of The center for research of Russia (Ukraine) Yoshihiko Okabe during the international conference "Violations of international law by Russia: consequences for peace", the correspondent of UKRINFORM.

"Although it is little known, they say that in fact now about 60% of the inhabitants of the Northern territory are Ukrainians. Indeed, during my visit there were a lot of people with names, which ends with "-Chenko", — said Yoshihiko Okabe.

According to him, the Japanese, a former resident of the island of Iturup, told him that about a year after the Soviet occupation of the Northern territory in 1945, workers from Ukraine were moved there: "they lived much poorer than the Japanese under the Soviet occupation, did not even have clothes, and some women even clothes. Such a tragic story is hardly widely known in Ukraine."

He also urged Ukrainians not to use the Russian name " Southern Kuril Islands "and call them" Southern Kuriles", and to use the Japanese name"Northern territory of Japan".

"To call the Islands" Southern Kuriles " means to recognize these Islands as the territory of Russia. I think, calling them "the Northern territory of Japan", we will be able to draw world attention to the fact that the Japanese territory was illegally occupied by Russia", — said the expert.
