The Unusual Black Bear

Although the area is known for black bears, bears are extremely rare. It is estimated that there are about 500 altogether, making them even rarer than pandas (not really bear). Bears are not very different in size and appearance compared to other black bears, except for the unique color of a black bear. This unusual bear needs many more studies to better understand its needs and habits. The spirit bear is a spectacular subspecies of the black bear that deserves our efforts to preserve it. The best we can do is study it first.

The spirit bear is considered sacred by the Indians of the region. It is easy to understand why.
