San Isabel National Forest

I escaped Oklahoma over a week ago and have been enjoying a beautiful place in the San Isabel National Forest of south central Colorado. Just north of Stonewall, Colorado is public Access to this campsite.

Driving up the gravel road to the campsite you will follow the North fork purgatoire river and a steady incline. You will pass through a state wildlife area which does not allow camping, but just keep going and you will reach the national Forest area.

Once you reach the national Forest you will start seeing marked camping areas. There are about 5 free primitive campsites along the road leading to the pay site. If you go all the way to the end of the road there is a pay site with restrooms, water, picnic tables and fire rings.

We chose the second free site which is close to our friends we met at Bosque del Oso, another camping site not far from here. It was a bit tricky backing and leveling our camper out but otherwise it's a great site. We are right next to the river and a great hiking trail.

Trout fishing is great but it's hard to find a good spot now as the river is running strong from spring rains and snow melt. The hiking trail I mentioned leads up higher into the mountains toward the snow line. A plane wreckage can be found and explored on this hike, also.

At the time I write this article, we have been here for 10 days. It is much like early spring weather here in the beginning of June, the pine pollen is just releasing. We've enjoyed many days with highs in the 70s and lows of 50s. Yesterday was pretty cold in the mid 40s and foggy/cloudy. The elevation here is near 10,000 ft.

Our next stop is Skagway lake near Colorado springs and the block party! We will probably be leaving on Thursday and setting up camp for the next 14 days.
