Canna-Curate School Of Cannabis Cultivation: Popping The Seeds

in #cannabis6 years ago

Not all cannabis seeds are created equal. Some are great, other ones not so much

A lot depends on how the pollinated mother was grown, and when seeds were picked. Drying and preserving them is also of the utmost importance. But even assuming that breeders have done everything by the book, there's always one thing, which gets the upper hand: GENETICS.

In fact, if genetic material on mother's or father's side was inferior or even less than stabilised, then we can expect as much as 20-30% of the plants from a given seed line to show undesirable mutations early on.

And let me be very clear on that! This is not a grower's fault!

However, if we obtain our seed pack from a reputable vendor or a friend who's been doing it for ages, we should expect mostly positive results, if we do everything right.

There are many steps that raise our chances of success like washing them in hydrogen peroxide solution or soaking them in a light concentration of gibberellic acid, but they are absolutely necessary only for old or extremely sensitive seeds!

Otherwise, we just drop them in a shot glass filled with distilled, mineral or quality tap water. The choice really depends on the tap water you have. For example, mine (Italian one) is absolutely fine, but in some countries PH of water might be very high or very low due to pollutants or excessive amounts of chlorine.

So if you don't know what's floating in your water, inform yourselves first, and if it's a no-go, get a bottled one.

After we drop the seeds, they begin to absorb the water, which botanists call an imbibition. The water activates the enzymes, which wake up the genetic information, that the seed contains. Without it we'll never see a single sprout!

The moment the seed cracks, the process of germination speeds up. In water it usually takes from 6 to 72 hrs if the seed is fresh and viable. Important thing is to keep them in water for up to 3 days if we don't see any sprout, and make sure that surrounding temperature doesn't fall below 20°C or 68°F (higher one is fine).

After that it's really hard to say, it might take 4 days or much longer. But in my experience some seeds pop even after 3 months in soil, when they were long forgotten... although most growers don't have that kind of time and patience.

After the seed sprouted in water, we take it out with a pair of tweezers, a spoon, or we just pour it down with water into a 1/3'' hole in your soil or a medium of your choice. We can also transfer it to a wet paper towel for a day or two, but it's not really necessary.

However, one thing we should always remember about, when we're doing this step, is that we never grab the seed by the sprout, but always by the shell!

Good work I learn the technic thank you.

Thank you very much for your continued support @pataty69

Thanks for all your constant support!!

Nice... yes, this is my germination method as well. One thing I ddn't see mentioned is putting the glass/ seed in a dark place. Not sure if this is exact;y necessary, but, it's what I'd always heard to do and have done. Also, as you said, crucial it is in a warm environment--or at least room temp. NOt cold!!

I put mine in rapid rooters, but honestly me seed cracking game sucks!! Cloning is very easy for me, but it took practice. Ill get it down soon, since im popping lots of seeds at the moment.

Great post. Growing from seed is under-rated!
Everyone should "Pheno hunt" at least once! :)

Definitely! With the seeds we have we need to find the strong points. Otherwise we don't really know what's going on. Almost everybody sells F1s, which are as unstable as wild outcrosses. But there are pearls to be found there for sure :)

I had my first bad Pheno this season. Two Girl Scout Cookies that are growing like snails. I planted them at the same time as my Northern Lights which is giant.

Yeah like a stomach ache! Eventually it's gonna happen to everybody :)

Yep, that's why its always best to start a couple extra but then gift the extras to friends if they all turn out good and have too many.

Happy hunting @liquid-mike. I know you will have fun with all your seeds, some may even be a challenge but there could be that pearl!

What's pheno-hunting? Just growing from seed and "weeding out" unwanted phenotypes/ traits? I am currently on a grow with 4 plants, all seeds from commerically purcahsed rec cannabis bags, so we'll see how it turns out... so far so good! Interestingly, all th eplants were female, which seems odd seeing as though they were obviously produced by plants that "hermied." Then again, perhaps this supports the idea i'd heard that claims any seeds made by a female cannabis plant will, in turn, also be female. It's complicated lol

Every cannabis seed produced by intersex individual, which pollinated itself, will produce "feminised seeds"... but they'll be female only as long as they don't herm :)

Haha right?? It's kind of a paradoxical situation, it seems. It's like... well, was it the seed which was "predisposed" to herm, or was it an environmental factor which caused the mutation?

It's an interesting question, but if we consider that genetic information cannot express itself without the environment, it's kinda moot point :) But even if you assume that plant hermed (it depends how much though) due to stress, she already expressed tendencies to herm in certain conditions. And once this trait is imprinted, it'll be passed onto the prodigy, so your chance of getting herm plants in S1 goes up significantly!

Love this post. We switched from paper towel germinating and just soak in water for 12 hours then plant in soil. And just let the seeds do the rest.

This is a super simple germination technique with a high success rate.

Great post, upvoted.

Cheers!
