Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Cannabis for Recreational Use
Today marks a major milestone for Cannabis reform. The Supreme Court of Mexico has ruled in two seperate cases that the current laws against Cannabis are un-constitutional. The government will now need to amend the laws to reflect the rulings, making recreational use of cannabis legal across the country.
In the first case, a plaintiff went to the court seeking constitutional protections to grow cannabis for personal use. In the second case, another person went to court to seek a constitutional protection for consuming cannabis. Both cases were victorious.
Now the court rulings will head to congress who must enact legislative reform in order to finalize any legal changes. This is a crucial ruling for a country that needs to focus it's crime fighting resources on more important things than plant connoisseurs. Researchers suggest most people in Mexican prison for drug crimes are there for cannabis possession. This ruling can put an end to that tyranny.
The Mexican Supreme Court Ruling also has effects on the United States. If Mexico successfully legalizes cannabis for recreational use, the United States will be in a sandwich between two countries that both allow recreational cannabis. Earlier this month, Canada officially celebrated the first day of cannabis legalization.
It's not official yet, but it sure looks promising for Mexico and the rest of North America. This is a big step in the right direction for cannabis reform around the world.
