Australian Greens Party Introduce Bill to parliament for Recreational Cannabis Use

A few months ago The Australia Greens Party announced their plans to introduce a bill into the Australian Federal Parliament by the end of the year to legalise cannabis use for adults in this country. The bill was finally introduced into parliament this week after and extensive drug awareness program across the country.

They are proposing a national infrastructure for legal cannabis use in Australia.
Amongst the bill’s proposals is:

• the creation of an Australian Cannabis Agency (ACA) to regulate use of the drug throughout Australia. You would be able to grow up to seven plants at home without any paperwork – for more you will require a license through the ACA.
• cannabis would be sold with plain packaging similar to tobacco and you have to be over 18 to purchase cannabis

The setup of the States of Australia means that a Federal bill would only require the smaller territories to introduce the law. The states in Australia would have to refer their powers to regulate cannabis to the federal government to have the scheme become national.

It is a great step in the right direction in this country, though I ultimately feel that the bill will be voted down. Most politicians and the general public are not ready for full legalisation yet as medicinal cannabis is still finding a foothold and acceptance in Australia.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the bill gets debated next year in parliament though I am not holding my breath.

At the very least the discussion is starting.
