Cars and coffee - breaking fast

in #cars6 years ago

We are currently on the last week of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims observes ritual fasting everyday from before the sun rises until after the sun sets. The month of Ramadan concludes with Eid Al-Fitri (commonly known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri), a Islamic holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan.

The Malaysian population consists of a majority Malay ethnicity who are almost all Muslims, so Ramadan and the subsequent Aidilfitri celebrations is a huge deal here. Although most non-Muslims like myself do not practice fasting, every year we would try to get together, at least once, with our Muslim friends in our car group and break fast together in the evening.

This year we held the occasion at a restaurant so aptly named for our common interest, Car's Kitchen. Like it's namesake, the restaurant is a car-themed joint and is co-located with a workshop called Euroworks.

We all arrived roughly around 7pm and placed our orders. I ordered fish & chips (with homemade tartar sauce) with a glass of Teh O Ais Laici (basically english tea with canned Lychee fruit). We broke fast at 7.24pm and quickly dug in.

As you can probably tell from the picture above, the portions were quite small especially considering the price. The food itself ranges from passable to mediocre. As @williedawonka would later describe his Spaghetti Carbonara that"....tasted like milk only.".

My appetite unsatisfied, I ordered a platter of fried potato wedges with cheese and mayonnaise, which tasted better than my F&C, but only just.

But the thing that irked me the most was the location of our table, which was just beyond the area under the awning outside the shop proper, and therefore out of range from any of the fans. We are experiencing a rather warm season even at night, and it was quite an uncomfortable experience to say the least.

If there is any redeeming quality to this experience, it is the waiting staff who were very friendly and gave us generous amount of attention despite being a full house yesterday.

Needless to say, I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for decent food. But if you like to stare at supercars while you eat and don't mind less-than-stellar food, you could give this place a try. But don't say I didn't warn you.

P/S: After the meal, we drove to a nearby LRT (Light rail transit) station where there was an un-opened carpark, and took a group photo there.
