Castillo de San Marcos | St Augustine, FL

in #castle6 years ago

Recently, I had the chance to visit the Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine, FL. St Augustine, of course, is considered the oldest city in the United States.

The Castillo de San Marcos is a 17th century Spanish fortress that faces the St. Augustine inlet, and out east towards the Atlantic ocean.

Lots of history here, and lots of terrible things happened within these walls as the castle was captured by various forces over the centuries.

Not so grand as castles found in Europe, but those of us in the USA need to make do with what we have.

At least the towers still stand.

Facing east towards the inlet.

The walls are thick, but not as high as I might have thought.

Most of the cannon and guns are still here.

The inner courtyard, probably where a lot of executions took place.

A lot of the inner rooms were left as they were, fully intact. Seems pretty gloomy.
All in all, this was a fun visit. Not a terribly impressive castle, but I haven't seen many.
