Carcassonne in southern france, withstood countless sieges and battles for over 1000 years. Fell into disuse after the treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 no longer putting it on the border with the crown of Aragon.

interesting how the hilly terrain surrounding the castle would practically make it hard to attack the castle. I can imagine enemies rolling and piling up on the base of the hill. strategically positioned.

It's enormous as well, on the other side its a bit more flat but it has 2 layers of walls the same height as in the photo with a moat/bridge
