Breeding Colours and Patterns I

The most experienced breeders will be sure to be aware of the genetic importance in the breeds they are dealing with. Having an idea of the desired look and traits is an important goal to start the journey with. Though no characteristic is ever guaranteed, picking a queen and stud with the most desirable traits will increase the odds of realising at least some of the desired characteristics. Beyond the plain colours, there are other combinations to be aware of. For instance, the tortoiseshell is a blend of colours that is desired by many for its distinct contrast between black and orange. This is a result of a number of recessive genes including cinnamon, chocolate and other colours black and orange. The various genetic mixes will result in interesting tortoiseshell mixes that are also dictated by gender. It’s worth noting that there are combinations that will cause male cats to be sterile and this may be a deciding factor for some breeders.

Aside from the recessive and dominate genes that can activate each other there are other genes which suppress others. These are known as genetic inhibitors that are deemed dominant and will normally lead to a dilution in colour.
