They will seem tender and become a bright pink shade and seem swollen. The abdomen of the cat will also begin to ridge and a distended appearance may be visible at this point. For breeders who are unsure of a cats physical state and require confirmation, a visit to the vet will confirm the maternal state and expert advice can be given during the early stages.

Realising the pregnancy of the cat is but the beginning of the great journey. From this point onwards, greater attention and care are required to support the queen. Physical interaction and nutritional supplementation are essential during this time and this will go on for a number of weeks. While human pregnancy averages over nine months, feline pregnancy last for a littler over 60 days. Gestation is the period for which the kittens will develop from an embryo inside the queen’s womb and this can last up to around 68 days while healthy kittens can be ready in just 60 days. Early birth of kittens is entirely normal but should be met with great attention as certain survival functions are still developing. Delayed births are also possible over the 68 day period. If this occurs, breeders can expect a larger than normal litter as they would have had extra days of nourishment and growth.
