Cats are intriguing creatures that will earn a reputation around the house for being curious, intelligent and sometimes solitary. Depending on the breed of cat, their temperament will vary greatly. The genetic pool of a cat heavily influences its behavioural tendencies as it grows. This is often important to consider for an owner when selecting a cat as they will need to cater for the emotional needs of their pets over time. There are very engaging and time demanding breeds while there are also very independent hands off cats too. Owners will enjoy getting to know their cat’s tendencies regardless. Another well-known cat that has gained fame all over the world is the Russian Blue.

As the name suggests, the cat hails its origins from the Artic and is one of the most sought after breeds in the region. They possess bold piercing eyes and a unique double overcoat, a feature not commonly seen among cats. While the Russian Blue is deemed as the cat fancy, there are two prominent sub choices that people have been able to distinguish. The British Shorthair and Blue Foreign both belong to the same fancy but carry fundamental difference in their type. While they may be different in style, they both possess the beautiful blue coat that is hard to come by in many breeds.

Over time, trade, conflict, globalization and many other circumstances have led to the travels of the Russian Blue around the world. It’s thought that the cat first made its way westwards from the North of Russia with travelling merchants. An interesting fact to know about this prestigious cat is that it holds the nickname “Archangel”, this is a reference to it’s first known voyage from the port of Archangel. As time went on, many breeding efforts were made to create a stable and consistent population of blue cats. This was not left to one breed of cat, many variations of the blue cat were cross bred with a variety of results. AS time moved on, the discovery of different Blue cats would take off and this eventually led to the introduction of the blue as a show cat. The breeds around the early 1800s were unique at the time and carried brightly coloured orange eyes. This is very different to the green and grey pupils that we see among the different pedigrees today. The amber eyes and double blue overcoat made them very strong competitors in the show world indeed.
