Cats who reach a state of deep sleep often do so for relatively shorter periods of about a third of the total light sleep session. Deep sleep is recognised through lack of response to noise and sometimes facial expressions. Generally, kittens and senior cats will sleep for longer periods than adults.

While cats are known to be nocturnal creatures, they are loving and social creatures that will bond with the household. Domestic cats may eventually shift their sleeping hours to conserve during the night so that they may engage during the day with their household peers. This also ties into other things such as feeding arrangements and grooming that a cat will eventually adapt to.
