La ciudad de Neo-Tokyo, una ciudad reconstruida después de la 3ra guerra mundial, corre el año 2019 y la ciudad se prepara para los juegos olímpicos, la historia se centra en Kaneda, líder de una banda de motociclistas delincuentes, es muy despreocupado, el y su mejor amigo Tetsuo se conocen desde niños pero Tetsuo es mostrado como la oveja negra de la historia llegan incluso a codiciar la motocicleta de Kaneda. La historia comienza durante un enfrentamiento del grupo motociclista de Kaneda conocido como los Capsulas contra sus rivales, Los Payasos, aquí se ve la rivalidad de Tetsuo con Kaneda, durante el enfrentamiento podemos ver la ciudad de Neo-Tokyo totalmente en un ambiente de Cyberpunk, durante el enfrentamiento Tetsuo se encuentra con uno de los niños Psíquicos, al mismo tiempo el gobierno llega con un grupo de guerrilleros para llevárselo e investigar al grupo de motociclista de Kaneda.
Kaneda
Kaori, la novia de Tetsuo va a verlo y lo encuentra mientras el escapa del hospital y le dice a ella que se vallan para algún sitio, mientras mas lejos mejor, ella siempre fue muy apegada a Tetsuo y decide robar la moto de Kaneda, esto atrae la atención del grupo de Los Payasos porque piensan que es Kaneda, el líder de los Capsulas, Tetsuo se ve en desventaja y a Kaori la golpean y la dejan casi desnuda, Kaneda aparece para salvarlo y allí Tetsuo se aprovecha para golpear al líder de Los Payasos, Kaneda le dice que lo deje en paz porque puede matarlo. En eso momento Tetsuo experimenta aberrantes alucinaciones e inmediatamente un grupo de médicos viene para atenderlo y se lo llevan de nuevo.
En una de las pruebas Tetsuo se sale de control, los niños psíquicos le dicen que se controle, pero el poder de Akira está en él, el mismo Tetsuo se dirige al estadio olímpico en construcción, allí mismo encuentra enterrado los restos del cuerpo de Akira, el ejercito japonés incluso con su avanzada tecnología no puede detener a Tetsuo, incluso podemos ver en la película como Tetsuo llega hasta la orbita del planeta para destruir una estación espacial. Kaneda utiliza armas avanzadas para detener a Tetsuo, podemos ver en la película que utiliza un arma laser para intentar detenerlo, pero el cuerpo de Tetsuo comienza a cambiar y a sanarse con parte de metal mediante el poder de Akira, de repente su cuerpo comienza transformase en una aberración enorme con partes mecánicas y biológicas, el comienza a crecer pero Tetsuo no soporta el dolor ni puede detener en presencia del poder de Akira, durante ese proceso asesina a su novia Kaori de forma violenta oprimiéndola, Tetsuo le pide ayuda a Kaneda pero el le dice que se detenga. Los niños psíquicos entrar para ayudar a salvar al inocente Kaneda, Takashi entra a la esfera de luz y los demás niños, aquí mismo Kaneda revive los recuerdos de Tetsuo y se encuentra con los recuerdos de Akira y los demás niños cuando estaban siendo estudiados por los científicos del gobierno de Japón.

Kaneda uses advanced weapons to stop Tetsuo, we can see in the movie that he uses a laser weapon to try to stop him, but Tetsuo's body begins to change and heal with metal part through the power of Akira, suddenly his body begins to transform into a huge aberration with mechanical and biological parts, he begins to grow but Tetsuo can not stand the pain nor can he stop in the presence of Akira's power, during that process he murders his girlfriend Kaori violently oppressing her, Tetsuo asks Kaneda for help but the Tells him to stop. The psychic children come in to help save the innocent Kaneda, Takashi enters the sphere of light and the other children, right here Kaneda relives the memories of Tetsuo and encounters the memories of Akira and the other children when they were being studied by the scientists from the government of Japan.
