There is a popular saying that says "it is not the same to see the bull from the barrier than to fight it." I must emphasize that I am against bullfighting and any other activity that involves animal abuse. However, this saying beyond the bullfighting context applies to any circumstance where you want to let others know that it is not the same to see a situation far away as mere spectators, what to confront this situation.

This saying can easily apply to another fact, such as living within a big city with its rhythms, contamination by the emission of cars and factories, in some cases also with a degree of visual and acoustic contamination, in other words, the fact of living inside the beast. But as the bullfighting saying, a very different thing is to see the bull from the barrier, because when we have the opportunity to see our city from a distance, and observe that it is integrated as a whole to the landscape, things change and we have another perspective from the city .

Hay un dicho popular que dice “no es lo mismo ver el toro desde la barrera que torearlo”. Debo resaltar que estoy en contra de las corridas de toros y de cualquier otra actividad que implique el maltrato animal. Sin embargo, este refrán más allá del contexto taurino se aplica a cualquier circunstancia donde se desea hacer saber a los demás que no es lo mismo ver una situación de lejos como simples espectadores, qué afrontar dicha situación.

Este refrán lo podemos aplicar fácilmente a otro hecho, como es el vivir dentro de una gran ciudad con sus ritmos acelerados, contaminación por la emisión de automóviles y fábricas, en algunos casos también con un alto grado de contaminación visual y acústica, en otras palabras, el hecho de vivir dentro de la bestia. Pero como dice el refrán taurino, una cosa muy diferente es ver el toro desde la barrera, porque cuando tenemos la oportunidad de ver a nuestra ciudad desde la distancia, integrándose como un todo al paisaje, las cosas cambian y tenemos otra perspectiva de la ciudad.

Barranquilla, the city where I live, is a city of cheerful people who live in an eternal carnival. It is a city in full expansion with a great boom in the construction of new buildings, both domiciliary and commercial. But the transport routes have not grown at the same pace as the city and sometimes the chaos is inevitable, originating many times a great traffic congestion which makes it much more difficult to go from one point to another in the city. In this kind of situation I always want to run away and escape to a distant forest or flee to another city, hoping to find some tranquility elsewhere.

Barranquilla, la ciudad donde yo vivo, es una ciudad de gente alegre que vive en un eterno carnaval. Es una ciudad en plena expansión con un gran auge en la construcción de nuevos edificios tanto domiciliares como comerciales. Pero las vías de transporte no han crecido al mismo ritmo de la ciudad y a veces el caos es inevitable, presentándose congestionamiento vehicular y haciendo más lento el ir de un punto al otro de la ciudad. En este tipo de situaciones siempre me dan ganas de salir corriendo y escapar hacia un bosque lejano o huir a otra ciudad, con la esperanza de encontrar un poco de tranquilidad en otro lugar.

But the feeling is different when I'm away from Barranquilla, nostalgia soon comes to me and I begin to count the days and the hours to return to my city and be able to see from a distance on my way back, that concrete landscape that rises on the plain as if artificial mountains but full of color and life in their entrails.

Today I want to show you a photographic series about the city of Barranquilla seen from a distance through my lens. I hope you can see the same beauty that I see.

Pero el sentimiento es diferente cuando estoy lejos de Barranquilla, enseguida llega a mí la nostalgia y comienzo a contar los días y las horas para regresar a mi ciudad y poder ver a la distancia en mi viaje de regreso, ese paisaje de concreto que se levanta sobre la planicie como si de montañas artificiales pero llenas de color y de vida en sus entrañas.

Hoy quiero mostrarte una serie fotográfica sobre la ciudad de Barranquilla vista desde la distancia a través de mi lente. Ojalá puedas ver la misma belleza que yo veo.
