May 30 Days Writing Challenge - Day Ten: What’s Your Favorite Morning Drink: Coffee, Tea, Water, Juice? Why?

The first thing that I do when I get up in the morning is to drink a glass of lemon infused water to wake up the body and hydrate, then off to do some stretching and yoga. I find it very important to do this for my body and mind wellness.

Thinking about this made me think what did I drink in the mornings when I was growing up?

When I was a kid, I would wake up and have breakfast of cereals, milk, and fruit to start my day. I had a glass of milk in the morning, as part of my snack in the afternoon and warm milk before I go to sleep. This was my routine.

When I started going to school and my mother believe that breakfast was the most important meal of the day so it was packed with rice for carbohydrates, some sausages, soft boiled egg. and a bowl of pork and beans for protein. Some fruit like a banana or apple for fiber. One thing that I dreaded seeing was a tall, cold glass of orange juice.

How can I describe Sunny Orange Concentrate? It is as if someone had mistakenly bottled orange flavored cough syrup and passed it off for a healthy juice drink. It has a strong medicinal taste and its smell sticks to your nose after you drank the whole damn glass.

It scarred me for life and until now I don't drink Orange juice even if it is freshly squeezed because it brings back these memories.

My teenage years were a bit better as I earned the right to refuse drinking the stuff and it became chocolate flavored Malt Milo with Milk.

They did a great ad campaign of presenting Milo as an energy giving drink for champions. Their imagery of active sports and winning made people buy into the belief that they will have more energy if they drink it.

Milo would continue to dominate my morning drink until I started working.

For a time I worked graveyard shift in a callcenter and I would start my day working at around 10 PM where most people would be fast asleep.

My body was not responding to this cycle well and remember falling asleep quite a number of times to the chagrin of my supervisor.

Milo was not cutting it anymore and I needed something stronger. In came the advent of coffee.

It was not love at first sip. It was a necessary bitter draught that my body needed. I was too cheap to buy designer coffees at that time and was perfectly content with instant coffee.

Things changed though when I met her. I will not rewrite if and if you are interested in knowing that story you can check this post Drinking local coffee in the fog

Then I met her. She liked her coffee scalding hot and a tall Cafe Mocha with a hint of nutmeg. She didn't it like it too sweet and took one creamer. She would silently sip her coffee and have the tiniest of a smile on the corner of her pert mouth as if she had a secret that nobody else knew.

She changed my habit and my drink of choice in the mornings. I have come to be a full coffee drinker that when I get to the office the first thing I do is brew coffee. Not part of my job description but it became part of my routine as I slowly grind the beans and put it in the coffee machine and wait for it to simmer and boil.

The aroma of grinding the coffee and it percolating as the grounds get dripped on and create a wonderful elixir of positivity and energy. Then you take that first sip of bliss and you know that you can handle anything thrown your way.

A few years from now I wonder what my drink of choice would be. It might be prune juice as I will need all the fiber and help in my old age hahaha.

I am planning to change my plain water with tea,but a number of research says it is not good. I wonder what I should do then.

Moderation is always key but I would say the antioxidants in tea is a good reason to drink Tea.

I drink coffee and tea. Coffee in the morning and Tea in the evening to relax.

I cannot drink coffee though. It has been giving me palpitations ever since.

Oh that is bad maybe decaf would be better for you. Although Tea has more caffeine than coffee.

Thanks for introducing Sunny.

Bwahahahhahaha Dawnee you are so funny but might have a point hahahahha

Hahaha! Yes, pa contest ni Davinsh. Ikaw nag chicks2x na naman (as usual 😂), ako naman about sa t** ng hayop! 😅

Yes to coffee with nutmeg! :) Now, since I am cheap as hell, I am very content with Kopiko Brown Coffee. I just add a pinch of salt and some vanilla syrup to taste.

P.S. Try Tim Horton's French Vanilla, yes? The only mamahaling coffee Id buy in a heartbeat. :)

Ohhh I have to try that especially for petsa de peligro days hahahhaha.

Ohhh I love French Vanilla!!! I have drank Tim Horton's hahhaa.

For me its 'The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup♪' Although I dont drink Folgers. It's just a catchy tune. Coffee is the next best thing to staying in bed nice and cozy :p

Hahahahhaa I know that you love your coffee in the mornings! Coffee, bed, a book and a nippy weather for cuddling would be awesome.

mmm thats very tempting... Can I not get up early to bring the kids to school? Let them sleep in so I can do just that :D

That's really too bad you've been scarred for life against OJ. I get the idea that whatever it was your mom had you drinking when you were younger was about as far away from actual orange juice as you could get. There's all kinds of orange flavored drinks, but they're not really orange juice. Oh, well, maybe someday you'll get a taste for it.

Coffee isn't something I drink. The few times I've been down a coffee bean aisle, I get a headache from the contact buzz. Some beans smell better than others, but anyway. Not feeling it.

That's quite a breakfast drink journey you have. Mine wasn't nearly as interesting. :)

Oh that good OJ on a hot sunny morning. Yep, I'm there lol. It gives good energy and a good feeling too. But only when it's the real stuff.

I agree. I wasn't ever a fan of Sunny Delight (the stuff my wife bought when our boys were growing up), but they of course loved it. I don't remember having tang all that much before that when I was growing up, but I'm pretty sure we did. It was okay, but you knew it wasn't orange juice.

I know what @maverickinvictus is going through, though. I had a similar experience with strawberries after eating way too many of them picking over a field one year. The good thing is they didn't weigh us at the beginning and the end of the day.

It took three years for me to eat another strawberry, and from there, I just don't like them nearly as much as I used to. It was my own fault, though. :) My oldest son, his wife and my wife all love them.

It's the same for Shepherds Pie. I cannot stand it anymore. My husband likes it and well... He can make it if he wants to :p lol

I guess that's where eating in moderation comes in. The more we eat the same thing over and over again, the more we just get used to it and it gets boring. Well, that and the fact that our palates change over time, and also, that we might not have liked the food as much as we thought we did. I've noticed that there are some things that I've eaten that I thought were great the first time around don't live up to the memory the second time around. Level of hunger has a lot to do with it, too.

So, in other words, sorry to say, but I think the cards are stacked against us. :)

Yeah Glen it was so artificial and I don't even know why it was manufactured!!

Tried fresh Orange Juice and most likely it is just in my head but I don't like the taste as it seems I taste that Sunny Orange Concentrate again haha

Oh I just love the smell of coffee beans and when it is freshly grounded.

I agree with you there on the smell of coffee beans. Not gonna go on saying about how good it smells. It wont be appropriate for this chat XD

I love waking up to a glass of hot lemon water! Sometimes I put a dash of apple cider vinegar in my lemon water, sometimes I add honey. Other mornings, I start with white peony tea, a special herbal tea blend to move my liver qi, or with matcha tea (or matcha lemonade if it's very warm)! I love beverages, probably more than food, so I am constantly drinking something. Right now, I am drinking a Kalita-brewed Brazilian pour-over coffee. My favorite. 😍

I always love putting honey in mine as well.

Ohhh Matcha Lemonade I love that as well although I don't drink it hot.

I had to check Kalita Brewing as I thought I was a coffee buff but never had done it. Although I have seen it but didn't know what it was called.

Thanks Amelia!

Hahahahaha lemonade is good for the day
