Today I learned about the Jewish chess player Miguel Neidorf, who escaped from Poland to Argentina in 1939. There, in 1943, he played 45 chess games in parallel - with his eyes covered.
"I did not do it for prestige," he said, "I hoped the event would reach the news in Poland, so maybe someone in my family would find out I was still alive and making contact with me."
Unfortunately, the effort was in vain. Neidorf's entire family - his wife, daughter, parents and four brothers - perished in the Holocaust.
