12 Things you DO NOT need to buy for your baby!

Babies are so exciting. You get their room set up, you take pregnancy photos, you have baby showers. Such fun! But in having all that fun and excitedness you can get caught up in the idea of needing things that are simply a waste of time or space or money or ALL THREE!

These are things you simply do not need!

  • A change table. Buy just a changing mat. They will grow out of the table, you can’t leave them for a second on it (whereas a mat on the ground you can turn around to grab that package of diapers in the closet or what not) or they might roll off, it takes up space in a room, you have no other use for it once they outgrow it. It just doesn’t make sense!

  • A bassinet. These are adorable! But your baby will again grow out of it soo quickly! Just get a crib that they can use for a long time.

  • A playpen. If you need to use the washroom or take the garbage out to the curb or something and can’t take your baby with you for a second- put them in the crib! Or the stroller! or the baby carrier! You should be playing with your baby not locking them up in a playpen otherwise.

  • Teething necklace. These do not work. I repeat. These are a scam. Also, an internal choking hazard should they swallow part of it. Also, an external choking hazard while they’re sleeping or in a car. If your baby is teething give them extra attention, more milk, a popsicle, a soother. Something normal that you already own.

  • Bibs. Babies are messy - they want to feed themselves, they want to use the paint themselves. Bibs cover like maybe 25% of your child’s clothing! Go to a garage sale and pick up some kids t-shirts that are a couple of sizes too big for your child that will actually cover them to their knees (given that they’re sitting down for these activities that should be sufficient)

  • Shoes. Until your baby is walking, shoes are a waste of money that they will grow out of.

  • Dress clothes. No one in the history of ever has ever said “that baby is so tacky, hanging out here at this wedding in like just a sundress/jeans/a sweater/etc” no one. Those baby suits and poofy dresses will either never get worn or will be ruined so fast you wish you had just left them in their normal clothes.

  • Another note on dress clothes is if your baby DOES need them (say they’re like a miniature flower girl or something in a wedding). Every kid's clothing store will have one for last-minute buying! It’s not like adults who buy that perfect outfit because they will need it one day and this one looks right- everything looks adorable on a baby!

  • Swimsuits. Just let your baby be naked/in a swim diaper

  • Bottle Cleaner. Just serialize it in your dishwasher or with boiling water. Your baby is exposed to millions of germs a day. Washing their bottle as you do other dishes is sufficient.

  • Wipe warmer. Just no. Waste of time. Waste of money. Wiping a bum takes 2 seconds and your baby is cozy and cuddled again.

  • Diaper Pail. If you buy one you’ll have to buy the bag inserts too. Just use a garbage can. Make it a diaper garbage can but a dollar store one or other small one is fine. You’ll want to take it out daily anyways.

  • What do you think? Did you buy these things for your baby? Would you add or take anything away from this list?
