Teach your children

In the book of Proverbs, it says: Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6) Even if you do not believe in the Bible you will recognise this as truth. There are so many things children need to know, and it is your responsibility to teach them. The home should be a primary place for learning, but too often parents let school, television, books, friends, and other organizations take over their job. These things are not necessarily bad, but they need to be carefully monitored.

As parents, you teach whether you realize it or not. Your children are constantly watching everything you do. Unfortunately, they are quicker to pick up your bad habits than all your good traits. One slip of the tongue, where you say that one word you have never said before, and your child is all of a sudden all ears. For the next week, your child is saying that one word over and over again reminding you of your bad example. Don't give up. Just remember that anything you say or do in private could easily be repeated in public. Also realize that with everything else you are teaching, two of the most important things are:

how to be a good husband or wife and how to be a good parent.

Then there is the area of virtue. Dr. Steve Stephens writes that when he was in college, one of his professors was an outspoken atheist. One day in class she mentioned that she was taking her children to Sunday School. He asked her why is she doing that as she is an Atheist. She replied: Because I am a good parent and there is no place outside the home, where virtues are consistently taught except in churches. Therefore, I make sure that my children are in Sunday School every Sunday. Churches are great places to learn virtue, but I believe this is only effective if it reinforces what's already being taught in the home.
