What is marriage? A pointer... | Matthew 22:30

Today during community group our group discussed marriage, its meaning and importance.

We read Matthew 22:30, and debated what it means for the significance of our partnerships.

Matthew 22:30 (ESV)

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

In this verse we hear Jesus speaking, and his words are clear that in the resurrection, men and women will no longer be married as on Earth.

Why?

We don't here see the explanation, rather we simply learn that marriage, as we know it, is an Earthly concept.

My thoughts:

Our group discussed the fact that marriage is a pointer, an imperfect example of what we were made for: relationship. But not just any relationship, a fullfilling and perfect relationship where we are known and know fully our partner. And not just any partner, but the one we were made for, and by: God.

Marriage is a pointer to the convenant love, "agape", which God offers mankind, and through marriage we glimpse, albeit imperfectly that which God will make perfect and eternal one day.

So we are not to marry in heaven because we will be with Christ.

We the church, the corporate body, will be united in perfect union with our creator and saviour, Jesus.

So yes marriage is beautiful and wonderful, but no its not eternal. Only after this life fades away and we are united with Christ eternally can we begin to understand the true meaning of marriage, covenant, union and in that relationship, and NO other, can we find fulfillment.
