Becoming Behavior
Titus 2:1 (KJV)
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
There is an obvious concern in this chapter not just for sound doctrine, but for a lifestyle that is fitting of it. God tells this preacher to not only give the people doctrinal truth but also lessons on how to make that truth more becoming and attractive.
This concern comes up at least three times in this chapter.
Titus 2:5 (KJV)
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
This blasphemy, it may be observed is in two forms:
The blasphemy and ridicule of those who are without. As they observe Christians behaving poorly they have cause to criticize
The blasphemy of the Christian himself as he behave in a manner unbecoming and thus blasphemous to his faith
Titus 2:10 (KJV)
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
The preacher is to teach behavior that is fitting of the Saviour. To warn his hearers of behavior that would vilify and defame the Saviour and then to point them to behavior that will adorn, decorate and garnish the Saviour
We’ve had too much Christianity intended to adorn the Christian at Christ’s expense and not nearly enough of adorn Christ at His servants’ sacrifice.
