Better Than Money

Read Psalm 119:1-176

33Teach me your decrees, O Lord; I will keep them to the end. 34Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. 35Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found. 36Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! 37Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. 38Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you.39Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. 40I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness. 41Lord, give me your unfailing love, the salvation that you promised me. 42Then I can answer those who taunt me, for I trust in your word. 43Do not snatch your word of truth from me, for your regulations are my only hope.Psalm 119:33-43

State lotteries have thrived in this country. Each week, millions of dollars are promised to a handful of winners. For a chance to be set for life financially, just buy a ticket.

Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, discusses something that has much more value than money: God’s law. Almost every verse mentions the virtues of knowing, learning, loving, keeping, and telling others about God’s law. In a word, God’s law is valuable! And where does this leave the yardstick of all worldly value? Read on for some perspective.

Other lessons in this psalm include appreciating the value of God’s Word; appreciating God’s rules; and asking God for insight into his Word.

In today’s world, where advertisements continually entice us to buy things, thinking selfishly comes almost automatically. We can easily imagine that contentment and happiness lie just beyond the next income level. Making the lust for money even stronger is the fact that in our society money represents power, influence, and success.

Certainly, money can buy comforts and offer some security, but it offers nothing that will last or that can ultimately satisfy us. Besides, God determines what we have (see Proverbs 22:2). The Bible, God’s Word, offers far more than money. In Scripture we find direction, guidance, and the meaning to life.

What means more to you? Knowing God or being rich? Make the psalm writer’s prayer your own—that God will give you a love for his statutes and not for making money.

Good Thursday evening, my dear sweet and grateful steemit family and friends :-)❤️ Another timely reminder for me because I've been busy trying to make ends meet, taking much time in checking if sbd is up or not, btc is rising or not. Unknowingly, my time is already consumed by these routines not having enough time to pray and read God's word. No wonder, this devotion is here to remind me to keep my focus on God and to make time to read His word. I've been busy thinking of how to augment my income, how to survive each day, how to settle all the bills on time, how to be better in my work for promotion so that I can have higher salary, and the list could go on. Little did I know, I've been losing time for my kids, my nanay, my family, and most especially, my top priority => GOD. This was the message for the last 2 Sundays already and still my stubbornness prevail. I kept on scheming and not focusing on God. I keep on thinking how to send my kids to school, how to sustain my nanay's medication, how to ... a lot! Instead of praying asking God to help me, there I was too busy and preoccupied of earning more for my family...I have nothing against working hard and earning money but not at the expense of losing your quality time with your family, your relationship is being compromised because of busyness...

God had blessed me with this new job for provision, for my family, to meet our needs everyday. Not to be burdened with a lot of payables, due dates, work pressure and a lot more. I need to see the reason (purpose) why God gave me this job and with that alone, I need to be thankful to Him, everyday. Not to be busy in augmenting my income. I need to pause and give Him my full attention in prayers, Bible reading and yes, I've missed leading our family devotion...

I couldn't help but cry and I'm holding back my tears as I write this post. My toddler is growing up so fast and so is my eldest. She always come sit beside me every time she feels sleepy. I have observed that and my heart melted, so last night, after replying to some and yes steeming a little bit, I went to lie down beside her, I was so upset because she was already asleep. I kissed her goodnight and I let my tears roll down and prayed before going to sleep.

We can easily imagine that contentment and happiness lie just beyond the next income level. Making the lust for money even stronger is the fact that in our society money represents power, influence, and success."

I know I don't have that lust for money with my situation now, it's just that I always think of the future, what lies ahead, how can I sustain my kids' education now that I'm all by myself, with no husband to help me out financially. I was pressured to earn some more for them. I am not justifying my busyness, the problem with me is that I need to set my priorities and I need to manage my time well.
