JUST KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH WILL NOT SAVE YOU!

in #christianity6 years ago (edited)

If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Hebrews 10:26-27

THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF THE TRUTH

People who have heard the gospel have been made aware of the truth that they are sinners and in need of a savior. They have heard of the gracious gift of salvation that is available due to the finished work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. They have been offered the forgiveness of their sins and the promise of eternal life.

WHY THEY PERISH

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

The reason that they deliberately continued to keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth is that, although they knew the truth, they refused to love the truth that would save them. By rejecting the atoning sacrifice of Jesus which takes away sins, there is no other sacrifice for sins left but only eternal punishment.

PUNISHMENT FOR REJECTING THE LAW OF MOSES

Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? Hebrews 10:28-29

“Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses” is a reference is to Deuteronomy 17:2-7. The sin spoken there is that of one “who is found doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky.” The punishment was physical death.

MUCH MORE SEVERE PUNISHMENT FOR REJECTING CHRIST

The rhetorical question asked to the Hebrew believers in Jesus the Messiah is, “How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?”

For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:30-31

The warning is clear; the punishment is not merely physical death, but separation from God in outer darkness and eternal punishment suffering in unquenchable fire.

As a Jewish believer in Yeshua (Jesus) as the Son of God and Messiah (Christ), I am sharing my understanding of the natural and spiritual fulfillments that are foreshadowed in the Festivals of Yehovah in a series of posts. For an overview of these teachings, use the link provided below:

Good post! As I was reading it the following verses came to mind!

John 5:46-47 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
Luke 24:44 "Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”

Dear @simms50,

Thank you for sharing these verses with me.

So what reward awaits Peter (Luke 22:54-62)?

Mark 3:28-30 "Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit."

To blaspheme against the Holy Spirit is to say that Jesus did his works through the power of Satan. That is unforgivable! But only a Satanist would imagine something as twisted as that.

Matthew 18:21-22 "Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven."

We sin, sometimes repeatedly. Sometimes we can't help ourselves - sometimes we are blinded by our sins, sometimes we forget the words of God, like Peter, and get caught up in the struggle around us. The important thing is to repent and come back to the truth.

Dear @lafferin,

The sin of blasphemy of the Spirit has been defined as it relates to each individual and their personal rejection of the ministry of the Holy Spirit. But blasphemy of the Spirit must also be defined in the light of the historic and cultural circumstances as it related to the nation of Israel as a corporate entity. Jesus rebuked the people of Israel of his day corporately calling them “a wicked and adulterous generation” (Mt 12:39). Except for a called out remnant which stood in opposition to the religious leaders of the day; that generation was condemned for blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of the demons, that this fellow drives out demons” Matthew 12:23-24

Beelzebub was the lord of the flies. He was the ruler of filth and bodily waste. The Pharisees attributed the glorious works of God to Beelzebub and blasphemed the Holy Spirit. The people believed that Jesus might be the Son of David, the promised King Messiah. Jesus had attested to the fact that He indeed was God's anointed by this miraculous feat of healing a demon-possessed mute. The crowds turned to the Pharisees for an answer because the Pharisees were the religious authorities. The religious leaders of that day rejected Jesus as the Christ because of their pride and because of their compromise with the pagan Roman government.
