The Reason Your Life is Miserable

언론 뉴스에 등장하는 사건은 이전에 우리가 보았던 사건과 비교할 수 없을 정도로 잔인하고 참혹합니다.

The news today is cruel and sad--way beyond our imagination.

이유 없이 불을 지르고 사람을 죽이고, 인생을 비관하여 자살하는 사람들은 이제 뉴스거리도 못됩니다.

People commit cruel crimes without any reasons or remorse; many end their own lives because they were in despair.

젊은이들은 취업이 안 된다고 악을 쓰고, 중년가장은 회사에서 쫓겨나듯 거리로 내몰리고 있습니다.

Young people suffer from unemployment; the older generation suffers massive lay-offs.

이제 겨우 육십이 지났을 뿐인데, 사회는 뒷방 늙은이 취급을 하고 있다. 하루 종일 TV를 보다가 지쳐서, 답답한 마음에 동네 뒷산에 오르락내리락 하는 것이 소일거리입니다.

Some barely passed the age of 50, and they are forced to retire; they get tired of staying home all day, so they frequent trecking trails.

그래서 불면증과 우울증환자가 치솟고 있고, 그 뒤를 이어 강박증, 조현병(정신분열증) 환자들도 급격하게 늘어나고 있습니다.

Insomnia and depression patients are increasing; it goes the same with people with OCD and schizophrenia.

그게 하나님을 모르는 세상 사람들의 이야기가 아니죠.

And this is not just about non-believers.

바로 하나님이 삶과 영혼을 축복해주시고 영원히 함께 해주신다는 것을 철썩 같이 믿고 있는 크리스천들도 다르지 않습니다.

Christians, who believe God will bless them, are no different.

그러나 교회에 가서도 이에 대한 해결책은 고사하고, 그 나물에 그 밥 같은 설교를 듣고 나면 가슴이 답답하다 못해서 불붙는 것 같습니다.

But church sermons don’t really help because they all sound the same after a while.

그래서 오늘은 이 얘기를 하고 싶습니다.

I’d like to talk about that today.

스스로 지혜롭다 하며 스스로 명철하다 하는 자들은 화 있을진저(사5:21)

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes

and clever in their own sight.  (Isaiah 5: 21)

지혜로운 자는 두려워하여 악을 떠나나 어리석은 자는 방자하여 스스로 믿느니라(잠14:16)

The wise fear the Lord and shun evil,

but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure. (Proverbs 14: 16) 

가령 내가 의인에게 말하기를 너는 살리라 하였다 하자 그가 그 공의를 스스로 믿고 죄악을 행하면 그 모든 의로운 행위가 하나도 기억되지 아니하리니 그가 그 지은 죄악으로 말미암아 곧 그 안에서 죽으리라(겔33:13)

If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done. (Ezekiel 33: 13)

예수를 열심히 믿고 교회에서 시키는 대로 주일성수와 십일조, 각종 봉사 등의 희생적인 신앙행위를 성실하고 열정적으로 해왔는데, 왜 영혼이 건조하고 냉랭하며 삶이 고단하고 팍팍한지 알 수 없다고 생각하시는 크리스천들이 한둘이 아닐 겁니다.

I’m sure there are Christians that are puzzled to be in such misery, even after they’ve done everything church asked them to do.

그래서 목회자들에게 상담해보면, 아직 때가 덜 되었다든가, 하나님께서 축복을 주시려고 연단하시는 거라든가, 믿음이 부족하니까 새벽기도에 나오라는 등의 답변이 되돌아 옵니다.

When they ask pastors, they would often receive answers like, “Your time hasn’t come.”, “God is training you through the hardships.”, and “Your faith is not strong enough.”

그러나 그렇게 말하는 목회자들의 삶을 찬찬히 살펴보세요.

Take a close look at the lives of these pastors.

그들로 교인들과 별 다름 없이 무능하고 무기력한 믿음으로, 날이 갈수록 기울어지는 교회를 이끌고 사역을 하느라 파김치가 되고 있죠.

They are suffering from fatigue and restlessness, for they have a hard time keeping their church building; they are not too different from these churchgoers.

그렇다고 목회자들이 믿음이 없다고 할 수 있겠습니까? 참으로 기이한 일이 아닐 수 없어요.

But can you say these pastors don’t have faith?

그래서 제가 당신의 영혼이 건조하고 냉랭하며 삶이 고단하고 팍팍한 이유에 대해서 말씀 드리겠습니다.

Let me tell you why you live in misery, with no blessings, despite your time spent in church.

바로 하나님이 당신의 인생을 돌보시지 않으며, 당신의 교회에 하나님이 떠나셨기 때문입니다.

You live in misery because God is not taking care of you.

그러나 제 주장을 받아들이는 사람들이 거의 없을 겁니다.

But not many people would listen to what I say.

성경의 이런 저런 구절을 근거로 들이밀면서, 자신 안에 성령이 계시며 하나님이 사랑하신다고 믿는다고 주장하면서, 그동안 교회에 열심히 다니면서 해온 각종 희생적인 신앙행위들을 나열하고 있습니다.

They explain how devoted they are with church work, how they believe in God’s love, and list Bible passages as proofs of their faith.

그러나 위의 말씀들의 대상이 누구일까요?

But to whom do these passages refer?

스스로 지혜롭고 스스로 명철하며 자신의 의로움을 스스로 믿었다고 말하는 이들이, 하나님을 모르는 세상 사람이 아니라 바로 이스라엘의 지도자들과 백성들이었으며, 한 때는 하나님이 의인이라고 인정해주신 사람이었습니다.

The ones referred are the teachers and leaders that God once approved as righteous.

그러나 기가 막히게도, 성경은 그들을 향해서 자신의 생각과 판단과 믿음이 하나님이 인정해주시는 게 아니라, 자기 확신인 스스로 믿은 것이라고 말하고 있으니 기이한 일입니다.

It’s strange to see that the Bible says these people believed in their own faith without God’s approval.

좁은 문으로 들어가기를 힘쓰라 내가 너희에게 이르노니 들어가기를 구하여도 못하는 자가 많으리라 집 주인이 일어나 문을 한 번 닫은 후에 너희가 밖에 서서 문을 두드리며 주여 열어 주소서 하면 그가 대답하여 이르되 나는 너희가 어디에서 온 자인지 알지 못하노라 하리니 그 때에 너희가 말하되 우리는 주 앞에서 먹고 마셨으며 주는 또한 우리를 길거리에서 가르치셨나이다 하나 그가 너희에게 말하여 이르되 나는 너희가 어디에서 왔는지 알지 못하노라 행악하는 모든 자들아 나를 떠나가라 하리라(눅13:24~27)

24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’

26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’

(Luke 13: 24-27)

우리네 교회의 설교에서는 위의 구절을 별로 들어보지 못하겠지만, 예수님은 좁은 문으로 들어가기를 애쓰고 힘쓰는 사람이라도 들어가지 못하는 사람들이 허다할 것이라는 뜨악한 말씀을 하셨습니다.

Jesus said not many people will enter heaven, even if they tried; but I know pastors today barely mention this passage to people.

그러나 그런 사람들은 자신이 아닐 것이라고 애써 외면하고 있죠.

Many believe they don’t belong in the group Jesus mentioned.

그러나 이 대상이 누구입니까? 바로 예수님과 동고동락하며 가르침을 받던 제자들이었습니다.

Who were these people? They were the ones who met Jesus in the flesh and followed him.

그런데 기이하게도, 예수님은 이들은 모른다며 매몰차게 쫓아내고 계십니다. 왜 그럴까요?

But Jesus says he doesn’t know those people. Why is that?

그들의 믿음이 변질되어 예수님의 명령에 관심이 없으며, 하나님의 뜻을 멸시하면서 죄를 밥 먹듯이 짓고 있으면서 회개할 생각도 없었기 때문입니다.

It is because their faith was tainted; they were not interested in what Jesus commanded them, and they were not interested in repenting their sins.

나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요 다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라 그 날에 많은 사람이 나더러 이르되 주여 주여 우리가 주의 이름으로 선지자 노릇 하며 주의 이름으로 귀신을 쫓아내며 주의 이름으로 많은 권능을 행하지 아니하였나이까 하리니 그 때에 내가 그들에게 밝히 말하되 내가 너희를 도무지 알지 못하니 불법을 행하는 자들아 내게서 떠나가라 하리라 그러므로 누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는 그 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람 같으리니 비가 내리고 창수가 나고 바람이 불어 그 집에 부딪치되 무너지지 아니하나니 이는 주추를 반석 위에 놓은 까닭이요 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하지 아니하는 자는 그 집을 모래 위에 지은 어리석은 사람 같으리니 비가 내리고 창수가 나고 바람이 불어 그 집에 부딪치매 무너져 그 무너짐이 심하니라(마7:21~27)

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

(Matthew 7: 21-27)

위의 예수님의 말씀은 한술 더 떠서, 한 때 성령의 능력으로 예언을 하며 귀신을 쫓아내면서 이적과 기적을 행했던 제자들조차 모르겠다고 차갑게 외면하고 계십니다.

Jesus even denies his followers, who once wielded the Holy Spirit’s amazing power to cast out demons.

그 이유는 불법을 행하였다며, 그들이 예수님의 말씀을 듣되 삶에 적용하며 하나님의 뜻대로 살며 지키지 않았다고 선포하고 계시다. 그래서 여러분에게 묻겠습니다.

He denies them because they were evil doers that did not apply God’s words in their lives. Let me ask you.

여러분이 지금까지 교회에서 시키는 대로 행했던, 예배의식에 참석하고 교회조직을 위한 봉사와 각종 희생적인 신앙행위들이 성경에서 명하신 하나님의 뜻이었는지 날카롭게 살펴보세요.

I’d like to ask you to take a look at what you’ve done and see whether your actions abide by God’s commands.

솔직히 말해서 그런 신앙행위들은 교회의 관행일 뿐입니다.

This is just a ritual church as added to their services.

그렇다고 필자가 교회의 종교의식이나 희생행위가 하나님의 뜻이 아니라고 말하는 게 아니에요.

I am not saying these church services are not what God wants.

하나님의 뜻이라고 콕 집어서 명령하신 것이 아니라는 겁니다.

I am just pointing out that He never commanded us to do this kind of thing.

그래서 먼저 성경에서 명한 하나님의 뜻을 철저하게 지키고 나서, 교회의 관행대로 신앙생활을 해야 하지 않겠습니까?

Shouldn’t we do what God told us to do first?

그런데 하나님의 뜻에는 관심이 없고, 종교적인 신앙행위를 열심히 한 것으로 자신의 믿음을 철썩 같이 확신하고 있으니 기가 막힌 일이죠. 그런 믿음은 스스로 지혜 있고 스스로 명철하고 스스로 의롭다고 믿고 있는 것일 뿐입니다.

It’s absurd that they confidently believe they have faith, although they are not even interested in what God wants for us.

하나님이 인정해주신 믿음이라면, 겨자씨만한 작은 믿음도 기적이 일어나고 기도응답이 신속하게 내려오며, 믿음의 표적으로 귀신을 쫓아내며 귀신이 일으킨 정신질환과 고질병을 치유하는 성령의 능력이 그 증거입니다.

If you have small faith, as small as a mustard seed, you’d be able to move mountains and show signs like being able to cast demons out and heal sick people.

그러니 여러분의 믿음을 찬찬히 살펴보고, 자신의 영혼과 삶이 고단하고 팍팍하다면 하나님이 돌보시지 않기 때문이라는 것을 인정하세요.

And after assessing your life and soul carefully, admit that God is not with you if you are still in pain and misery.

그래도 자신의 믿음을 우긴다면 심판대 앞에서 진위를 깨닫게 될 겁니다.

You will see for yourself when you stand in front of God.

그러나 그 때는 더 이상 돌이킬 기회가 주어지지 않을 겁니다.

But when that moment comes, you won’t have a second chance.
