The Truth About Bible Studies No One Talks About

제 중학교시절에 공부를 열심히 하는 친구가 있었습니다. 그 친구는 정말 열심히 공부했어요.
There was a friend of mine who really studied hard. I mean, REALLY hard.

수업시간에도 열심히 공부했고 쉬는 시간과 점심시간에도 놀지 않고 공부했다. 가끔씩 그 친구네 집에서 시험공부를 같이 한 적도 있었는데, 자정이 넘도록 열심히 공부하였습니다.
He’d study in classes, during recess, and even during lunch time. I used to study with him during midterms and finals; he would study overnight.

그런데 문제는 성적이었죠.
The problem was his grades.

성적이 아주 나쁜 것은 아니었지만, 그토록 열심히 공부한 것치고는 저조한 성적이었습니다.
They weren’t bad; but the weren’t as good, compared to the time and effort he put into studying.

그냥 중간정도의 성적에 불과했습니다.
His grades were just average.

반에서 1등을 해도 시원찮을 정도로 공부를 열심히 했는데, 왜 이렇게 성적이 안 나오는지 그 친구도 필자도 기이하게 여겼죠.
He thought it was strange, too, since he studied very hard--hard enought to rank on top--but it never happened.

지금 돌이켜 생각해볼 때, 그 친구는 시험문제에 나오는 핵심적인 내용을 집중적으로 공부했다기보다는, 그냥 저돌적으로 열심히 공부하였던 것 같습니다.
Looking back, I think he “just studied hard,” rather than effectively.

말하자면 시험에 나오지도 않은 사소한 내용까지 열심히 외우다보니, 정작 중요한 내용을 집중적으로 암기하지 못한 결과가 아닌가 싶어요.
In other words, he probably studied the textbook inside out, although the test only covered a small part of it; he couldn’t pinpoint what was important that would come out on the exam.

이런 일이 우리네 교회에도 있습니다.
And this kind of thing happens in church, too.

성경공부를 열심히 하는 것에 비해서 말씀의 능력을 경험하지 못하고 살고 있습니다.
People study the Bible hard but do not experience the word of God as much.

성경말씀이 무엇입니까? 바로 하나님의 말씀입니다.
What is the Bible? It is the word of God.

하나님은 말씀으로 자신의 존재감을 드러내십니다.
God reveals himself through his words.

그래서 말씀이 곧 하나님이라고 하시지 않았습니까?
Didn’t He say the word is God Himself, no?

그래서 우리네 교회에서는 성경 공부하는 것으로 치자면, 세계 어느 교회에 못지않을 겁니다.
I mean, us Koreans probably study the Bible more than anybody in this world.

수많은 예배의 중심이 성경을 배우는 설교시간이고, 새로운 직분을 맡으려면 직분에 해당하는 단계의 성경공부를 해야 하며, 성경 읽기를 격려하거나 성경필사를 독려하여 연말에 시상을 하고, 교회마다 각종 성경공부 프로그램을 도입하여 열심히 공부하고 있습니다.
Many Sunday services include Bible studies; when people want titles in church, they must have Bible studies at particular levels for those titles; pastors urge people to read or write the Bible (and they give out award at the end of the year); and every church has separate Bible studies.

현시대는 성경이 완성된 시대이므로, 성경공부를 열심히 하면 천국에 가는 것은 물론이고 이 땅에서 하나님의 축복을 받아 부유하고 성공적으로 살 것을 믿어 의심치 않는 눈치예요.
The modern day is the age where the Bible is complete; so people tend to believe they will succeed in life if they keep on studying the Bible.

그래서 성경지식을 쌓아둔 만큼 말씀의 능력을 경험하며 살고 있습니까? 아니라면 아닌 것이고 없다면 없는 겁니다.
So do they--do you--live everyday experiencing words of God, His amazing power? There is no “maybe.” It’s either yes or no.

수십 년동안 교회에 다니면서, 성경지식을 빼곡하게 머릿속에 넣어둔 교인들도 무능하고 무기력하게 사는 이들이 널려 있습니다.
There are tons of people who have the whole book in their heads but without the amazing power of God.

그렇다면 왜 이런 일이 일어날까요?
Why does this happen?

이에 대한 신앙선배가 성경에 소개되고 있습니다. 바로 바리새인과 서기관들이지요.
There are good examples in the Bible--the Pharisees and scribes.

이들은 당시 성경인 모세오경을 철저하게 암기해서 자녀들이나 다른 교인들에게 가르쳐주었습니다.
They memorized the whole Bible--5 books written by Moses at the time- and taught others.

그러나 그들의 말로는 처참합니다.
But their final destination wasn’t too charming.

예수님으로부터 독사의 새끼라는 저주를 받고 지옥의 불에 던져졌으니 말입니다.
They were called the offsprings of snakes and were thrown out to Hell.

그렇다면 성경지식이 해박한 바리새인과 서기관들에게 왜 이런 불행이 일어났을까요?
Why did that happen to them, the ones who were very knowledgeable about the Bible?

그들은 성경지식을 머릿속에 외운 이유가 말씀대로 살려고 하는 것이 아니라, 자신의 의를 드러내고 남을 정죄하는 수단으로 삼았기 때문입니다.
It was because they studied and memorised the Bible to condemn others and make themselves look good, not to really apply to their lives.

그래서 말씀이 육신이 되어 이 땅에 오신 예수님을 알아보지 못하고, 질투와 시기에 휩싸여서 자신이 암기한 성경구절들 들이밀면서 비난하고 정죄하는 데 혈안이 되었습니다.
So they weren’t able to see who Jesus was and why he came to earth; they were busy condemning Jesus with Bible verses, devoured by envy.

이처럼 성경을 빼곡하게 암기하였던 서기관들과 바리새인의 불행한 운명이 우리네 교인들에게도 많은 교훈을 시사해주고 있어요.
Their unfortunate lives recorded in the Bible teach us a lot, after all this time.

성경지식을 머릿속에 쌓아놓는다고 말씀대로 사는 것도 아니고 말씀의 위력을 경험하는 것도 아니라는 것을 말입니다.
We know that we don’t experience God’s words, even though we have all the verses inside our heads.

그렇다면 어떻게 해야 말씀의 위력을 경험하면서, 말씀대로 살 수 있을까요?
What is the key to live according to God’s words and experience His power?

말씀을 지식으로 쌓아두는 것이 아니라 깨달음으로 가슴에 내려와야 합니다.
You need the words to come and touch your heart, not stay in your head.

성경을 읽을 때 지식으로 머리에 쌓아두는 것이 아니라 가슴에 깨달음으로 내려와야 합니다.
When you read, the words have to touch your heart; you shouldn’t just store it in your brain.

말하자면 말씀을 읽을 때 가슴이 뭉클하면서, 말씀이 자신에게 하는 말씀처럼 느껴져야 합니다. 이런 현상이 바로 깨달음이지요.
In other words, you have to be moved by those words, as if the words are specifically for you. This is realization, an epiphany.

그러나 깨달음은 성경을 많이 읽고 설교를 많이 들으며 성경공부를 많이 한다고 해서 생겨나는 것이 아닙니다.
But the realization does not just come to you because you attend Bible studies or Sunday services.

성령께서 말씀에 대한 깨달음을 주셔야 할 겁니다.
Holy Spirit has to grant you the understanding and the realization.

말하자면 성령께서 말씀을 비추어주신다는 뜻인 조명해주어야 합니다.
In other words, Holy Spirit has to put the light on the words you read.

그들과 함께 음식 잡수실 때에 떡을 가지사 축사하시고 떼어 그들에게 주시니 그들의 눈이 밝아져 그인 줄 알아 보더니 예수는 그들에게 보이지 아니하시는지라 그들이 서로 말하되 길에서 우리에게 말씀하시고 우리에게 성경을 풀어 주실 때에 우리 속에서 마음이 뜨겁지 아니하더냐 하고(눅24:30~32)
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24: 30-32)

말씀이 가슴에 내려와서 뜨겁게 되는 현상을 말했던 이들이 바로 엠마오로 가던 제자들이었습니다.
The wones who spoke about the phenomenon of their hearts burning were the followers who headed for Emmaus.

그들은 어두워서 예수님을 제대로 알아보지는 못했지만, 예수님의 말씀을 들을 때에 가슴이 뜨거워지고 뭉클해지는 현상을 경험했다고 고백하고 있어요.
They did not recognize Jesus in the dark, but they felt their hearts burning within them when they heard Jesus.

다윗이 시편에서 말씀이 송이 꿀보다 더 달다고 노래한 것과 같은 맥락입니다.
It’s the same notion of King David saying God’s word is sweeter than honey.

이렇게 말씀을 읽거나 들을 때 뜨겁게 해주시는 이가 바로 성령이십니다.
The one that make us passionate is the Holy Spirit.

그러므로 성령이 내주하는 기도를 동반하면서 성경을 읽어야 비로소 말씀이 깨달음으로 가슴에 내려오게 됩니다. 말씀을 삶에 적용하는 능력은 성령이 주시는 지혜가 있어야합니다.
That is why we must pray for Holy Spirit’s indwelling and read the Bible; only them, we realize what the word means and are able to apply it to our lives.

그렇다면 말씀을 깨달음으로 가슴에 넣어주기만 하면 되는 것일까요? 아니죠.
Then is it all good to go if we put God’s words within our hearts? Nope.

말씀을 읽는 이유는 머릿속에 저장하거나 가슴의 뜨거움을 경험하기 위해서가 아닙니다. 말씀대로 살려고 하는 것이죠.
The reason we read His word is not to feel emotional about it; we read in order to live accordingly.

그러나 성경은 수천년 전에, 우리와 다른 환경과 문화를 배경으로 기록되었습니다.
But the Bible is written long ago, in different time in history, as well as culture.

그래서 현대를 사는 우리에게 적용하려면 성령께서 지혜를 주셔야 가능한 일입니다.
So it is possible for us to apply it out our lives only if the Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom to do so.

아니라면 성경은 재미있는 옛날이야기에 불과할 겁니다.
If not, the Bible is a mere collection of fables and other interesting stories.

이로써 우리도 듣던 날부터 너희를 위하여 기도하기를 그치지 아니하고 구하노니 너희로 하여금 모든 신령한 지혜와 총명에 하나님의 뜻을 아는 것으로 채우게 하시고 주께 합당하게 행하여 범사에 기쁘시게 하고 모든 선한 일에 열매를 맺게 하시며 하나님을 아는 것에 자라게 하시고 그의 영광의 힘을 따라 모든 능력으로 능하게 하시며 기쁨으로 모든 견딤과 오래 참음에 이르게 하시고 우리로 하여금 빛 가운데서 성도의 기업의 부분을 얻기에 합당하게 하신 아버지께 감사하게 하시기를 원하노라(골1:9~12)
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father,who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. (Colossians 1: 9-12)

위의 유명한 바울의 기도문을 살펴봅시다.
Let’s take a look at the passage above, the famous prayer of Paul.

바울은 신령한 지혜와 총명(깨달음)을 통하여 하나님의 뜻을 깨달으며, 깨닫는 것에 그치지 않고 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 선한 일에 열매를 맺게 하시며, 하나님을 잘 알게 하여 믿음이 성장하며 놀라운 영적 능력의 소유자가 되게 하는 동력을 구하고 있지요.
Paul asks for wisdom to understand God’s words, to make God happy, to bloom and come to fruition for good deeds, and to grow and acquire spiritual power to know more about God.

그렇다면 그러한 능력을 주시는 이가 누굽니까? 바로 하나님이 아니십니까?
Who’s the one that gives us such power? Isn’t He the Lord our God?

그러므로 성경의 깨달음을 삶에 적용하여 풍성한 성령의 열매가 맺히려면 성령께서 삶에 지혜롭게 적용하는 능력을 주셔야 합니다.
So the Holy Spirit needs to give you the ability to apply God’s words to your life, in order to acquire fruit of the Spirit.

그게 없다면 성경의 깨달음도 한 때 좋았던 감정에 불과할 겁니다.
If you don’t have that, what you’ve felt is just a good feeling you got from reading the Bible.

결국 성경을 읽거나 설교를 듣고, 성경공부를 할 때 필수적인 것은, 성령이 주시는 깨달음과 삶에 적용하여 풍성한 열매를 맺게 하는 지혜가 필수적입니다.
In the end, you need wisdom to apply what you hear (sermons) and read (the Bible) to your life, through realization the Holy Spirit grants you.

성령의 또 다른 이름이 지혜의 신이십니다.
The Holy Spirit is also called the spirit of wisdom.

그러므로 성령이 내주하는 기도를 동반하지 않는 성경공부는 아무런 소용이 없어요.
So the Bible study without prayer for the Holy Spirit’s indwelling is no use.

작금의 우리네 크리스천들이 성경을 열심히 읽고 성경공부를 열심히 하였지만 무능하고 무기력하게 살아가는 이유입니다.
That’s why people live their miserable lives without any changes even with busy Bible study schedule.

물론 기도만 열심히 하고 성경을 읽지 않으면 신비주의자가 되기 십상입니다.
If you only pray and not read the word, you’ll become a mystic.

매일 말씀을 규칙적으로 정독하는 습관은 필수적이지요.
So reading the Bible regularly (on daily basis) is a must.

그래서 해박한 성경지식이 있어야 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫게 됩니다.
And the knowledge of the Bible will help you understand God’s true message.

성경지식에 바탕을 두지 않은 깨달음은 귀신이 주는 미혹에 불과해요.
Realization outside the biblical knowledge is mere temptation of demons.

그러므로 성경을 날마다 사모하며 정독하되, 성령이 내주하는 기도를 동반하여야 비로소 깨달음으로 가슴에 내려오고, 삶에 지혜롭게 적용하여 풍성한 열매를 맺으며 하나님이 기뻐하시는 삶을 살 수 있습니다.
So you must read the Bible everyday, along with prayer to ask the Holy Spirit’s indwelling; then the words will come to you. You must apply them to your life--then you’d be able to live the life God rejoices.

물론 놀라운 말씀의 능력을 경험하며 삶에 풍성하게 누리게 될 겁니다.
And, of course, you will experience amazing power of God and enjoy your life on earth.
