What is the essence of praying?

For me, the essence of praying is being dependent on to someone that is greater than you or simply being dependent on to God's source of life and blessings and to God Himself. It's a way where you acknowledge that there is a great provider of all and which gives you hope and faith of what your heart desires. It is also a way where you submit on to someone that is most authoritative in life; where you ask for forgiveness and as you acknowledge your sins. There could be many answers(broad in terms and need deeper understanding) for this question depending on one's culture and beliefs and I think I did put some of those.
