Nara-city, Japan/奈良市

Nara is well known as a great Buddha which is the largest in Japan.
It is about 2 hours from Kansai International Airport, about 1 hour by train from Osaka/Kyoto.

奈良と言えば大仏、というほど日本一大きい大仏がある場所です。
関西国際空港から約2時間、大阪・京都からは電車で約1時間の場所にあります。

ancient city which was a capital 1300 years ago/1300年前の都の地

In Nara city, there was a capital called "Heijo Palace" which was built in 710 AD. It is said that this city mimics the Chinese capital "Chang'an". Around 84 years till 794 AD, the politics was carried out here, Heijo palace.　There are still historical sites as "Heijo Palace", and in February 1998 it is registered as a World Heritage Site as "Cultural Property of Ancient Nara".
And there are 2 restored buildings called "the 1st Daigokudenin" and "Suzakumon gate" which had been placed as a symbol of this capital.
In addition, we can see so many old temples in Nara area, and some are from the Nara period(710-794AD). Even after burning because of the war, people strongly wished to rebuilt them and rebuilding was executed. Compared with the buildings in Kyoto or Nikko Toshogu, temples in Nara are very simple without decolations. And we can see the character with the inner floor of the buildings in Nara period are an earthen floor.

奈良市には710年に遷都された「平城宮」という都が置かれました。この都は中国の都「長安」を模したと言われています。その後、794年に京都へ遷るまでの84年間、ここで政治が執り行われました。また現在も「平城宮跡」として史跡が残されており、1998年2月には「古都奈良の文化財」として世界遺産に登録されています。また、当時からこの都の象徴として置かれていた第一次大極殿や朱雀門がそれぞれ、復元されています。また、奈良には多くの寺院が残されており奈良時代の建造物もあれば、戦火で焼けるなどした後も、人々が強く復興を願い再建され続けてきました。京都の建物や日光東照宮などと比べると、装飾性が少なく無骨でシンプルな建物が多いことが特徴です。また建物の内陣は土間が多いことも奈良時代の建物の特徴だと言えます。

traditional event/伝統行事

Many traditional events have been carried out since the Nara era.
Particularly known as a "Omizutori" in Todaiji Nigatsudo, which is held every March, and there are many other lantern baskets of ”Kasuga Taisha Shrine” and "Mantokuyoe" at Todaiji.

奈良時代から多くの伝統行事が執り行われています。特に知られるのは、毎年3月に行われる東大寺二月堂のお水取りで、他にも春日大社の万灯籠や、東大寺大仏殿でお盆に行われる万灯供養会などがあります。

Ruins/遺跡（東大寺東塔跡）

Trying to build a new building in the center of Nara City will take a huge years. Because There is ruins everywhere, construction can only be started after investigation. This picture is about the East pagoda trace of Todaiji temple at Nara Park in the public release of the excavation survey in 2015. A survey has been made that it is estimated that a seven-story pagoda with a height of approximately 100m was built in the Nara period (764AD), from the scale of the foundation and traces between the pillars.

奈良市の中心部で新たに建物を建てようとすると、膨大な年月が掛かります。それは遺跡があるため、調査を実施してからしか工事を開始できないからです。この写真は2015年に奈良公園内の東大寺東塔跡の発掘調査の一般公開の際の写真です。基壇の規模や柱間の痕跡から、奈良時代（764年)におよそ100mの高さの七重の塔が建てられていたと推測されるという調査結果が出ています。

Deers of Nara/奈良のシカ

Speaking of Nara the deer is very famous. "Deer of Nara" is also said to be a shinroku(God deer), it is designated as kind of natural treasure. Around Nara park, we can see many tourists enjoy feed them special cracker and taking photograghys. Also, when the deer crosses the street, the cars temporarily stop and wait until all the fellows are crossing.

奈良と言えば鹿がとても有名です。「奈良のシカ」は神鹿（しんろく）とも言われ、天然記念物に指定されています。奈良公園界隈では多くの鹿と、彼らとの交流を楽しんでいる観光客を見ることができます。また、鹿が道路を横切る時には車は一旦停止して全ての仲間が渡り切るまで待つこともあります。

Naramachi-town/奈良町

In Nara period, it was designed as a outside town of the Heijo Palace, and it is known as the historical townscape where the town houses from Edo period still remains. Currently there are cafés and souvenir shops making full use of the attractive houses, and many tourists visit this Naramachi-town which is registered as World Heritage sites such as Gangoji-temple. There is also a restaurant using traditional vegetables in Nara area.

奈良時代には平城宮の外京として整備され、江戸時代以降の町家が今も残る歴史的な町並みとして知られています。現在は風情がある長屋を活かしたカフェや土産物店が並び、元興寺など世界遺産に登録された寺院とともに、多くの観光客が訪れています。また、奈良の伝統野菜を使ったレストランもあります。

traditional crafts/伝統工芸

There are various traditional crafts in Nara area. Such as Nara brush,Sumi(ink), Nara Sarashi/(hemp clothes), Akahadayaki(pottery), Ittobori(Carving) etc.

奈良には様々な伝統工芸も残されています。奈良筆や墨・奈良晒・赤膚焼・一刀彫・漆器などが上げられます。

Small old temples and the nature/小さい古寺と四季

Also there are many small temples like Futaiji-temple, which are not well known. Although there might not be delicate beauty like Kyoto temples, we can enjoy the buildings left from the ancient with beautiful flowers and autumn leaves and other seasonal nature.

また、奈良にはあまり知られていない、不退寺のような小さな寺院が沢山あります。京都のような繊細な美しさはないかも知れませんが、古代から残されてきた建造物を美しい花や紅葉🍁など四季折々の自然と共に楽しむことができます。

Nara and me/奈良と私

Because of working as a part-time job at the restoration construction site of old temple in 2001, it became a life work related to old temples, shrines and traditional crafts. In order to brush my own work up, I walk through the streets of Nara, I met many artisans and learned a lot. In addition, ancient treasures are left in "Shosoin " since Nara period, and it is open to the public once a year.
As I was still in my 20s, a teacher kept me saying "Let's see the finest one". I wasn't so sure what does it mean,but I tried to follow her word; go to museum, to see treasures and buildings of national treasures or important cultural assets, and leaned the artisan's skills.By doing so, I feel that my way of thinking about my work and my aim has gradually come to right direction. I can go everywhere with my bicycle to see national treasure Buddha statue inside of temple building from Nara period. These things will nurture my own "Aesthetic sense" from this environment.And it may not so super attractive like another places because everything very old and simple, but still I believe there are so many awesome arts in this ancient city, so I would like to introduce this area to the people all over the world. 2001年から古寺の修復工事現場でアルバイトをさせて戴いたことをきっかけに、古社寺や伝統工芸に関わることがライフワークになりました。自分の手わざを高めるために、奈良の街中を歩き、様々な職人の皆さんに会い多くを学ぶことができました。また奈良の「正倉院」には古代の宝物が残され、年に1度、一般に公開されています。まだ20代の頃に、ある先生から「本物を見るようにしなさい」と言われ続けてきました。その頃はなにを言われているのかあまりピンときていなかったのですが、言われるままに博物館へ足を運び、国宝や重要文化財の宝物、建造物を見て、また職人の技術を知ることによって、自分自身の仕事に対する考え方や目指す先が少しずつ見えてきたように感じています。自転車で少し走れば国宝の仏像や寺院があるこの恵まれた環境で、これからも自分の「審美眼」を養い、派手ではないかも知れませんが多くの人にこの古都の魅力を知っていただけるよう、発信していけるといいなと思っています。
