Museum with Biuiam: Hong Kong Maritime Museum (Sharks and Humanity)/ 與Biuiam 行博物館 (鯊魚與人類)

in #cn7 years ago

I enjoy knowing new things, and so going to museum is something that I enjoy doing, I have been to numerous museums ever since I was a child, but only in recent years, I have documented some of my visits. So I am trying to start a new series related to museum. I like seeing things that interests me and museum is definitely a place that amazes me each time. In my museum post, I probably won’t be feeding much of the information on the exhibition things, but probably more on my feelings about them. After all, those museum are always accessible by everyone and many of those info are available on the internet~

Confession:
Honestly, time is limited for each visit, and there will be lots of things that I miss, and I might not be able to look and understand everything. And of course it would be better if I get to sit on a electric wheel chair to tour the museum, the walking part is so tiring, especially in big museum.

Recently, I went to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum as it was doing a special exhibition on Sharks and Humanity. It is more of an art exhibitions aiming to raise the public awareness of shark conservation.

It is always a controversy topic when we are talking about shark fins soup. No doubt the spearhead will point to Chinese cuisine, as Chinese are the major consumption of shark fin related product. Hong Kong on the other hand plays a major roles in the global shark fin trades.

The use of ceramics in this art pieces brilliantly connect the consumption of sharks to Chinese, and the brittleness of ceramics also reflected how fragile the life of the sharks can be when faced with a large demand.

Sharks are being over-fished for their fins, by nets and hooks

Another art with strong sense of Chinese style, this art also shows different historical events as well as different that human perform with the ocean, trying to remind us, the acts that we are doing might be jeopardising us and the nature at the same time.

Shark fins were the only parts that the fisherman are after for the shark, and it is this part of the fish that sealed the part of the sharks fate as a prey. It also reflect that how it prison the fisherman to commit such acts due to the profit behind.

A top predator without its fin is just a death sentenced animal, waiting to be fall prey to others or drown by itself.

Shark finning activities refers to cutting of the sharks fins, while "releasing" the shark back into the ocean. This is frequently performed by fishermen because of the most profitable part of the shark is its fins, and by leaving behind the body core, the fishermen can retain more storage etc. But for the sharks, with the missing of the fins, the sharks will not be able to swim properly. Sharks are fish without the swim bladders, their swimming and maintaining of proper position relies heavily on their fins. Without their pectoral fins, sharks will cannot generate enough up-lift and will sink to the bottom of the sea. Also many sharks require constant swimming so to maintain the oxygenated water passing their gills, by removing a shark's fins and putting it back to the waters is no different from suffocating it to death.

This art is a great white shark made with all the preys that it feeds on naturally, being the top predator in the sea, yet it never see human as part of its diet. The two children playing at its tail, was intended to remind us that, humans are not food for sharks, and sharks are not human's enemy.

Sharks are one of the ancient animals that evolved and survived over 500 millions years ago, but they have faced no threats greater than us than any historical events. Our over fishing for their fins and pollution has been estimated to kill 73 millions of sharks annually.

Is this a fighting fish, or a shark with its fins cut and bleeding?

When the buying stops the killing can too
