Today, vending machines, where we can put a coin and buy drinks, coffee or a newspaper, are part of everyday life. But they are not as modern a device as many think.
The first such apparatus was invented in the 1st century BC. by the ancient Greek mathematician and engineer Heron of Alexandria.
Using a mechanism with a counterweight and a metal coin, the inhabitants of Alexandria could buy it ... holy water.
