The red rock spires and jutting rock formations of Garden of the Gods has long inspired those who have witnessed this natural phenomenon. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the name Garden of the Gods was originally given to this beautiful landmark by a surveyor named Rufus Cable in 1859 after he and a fellow surveyor set out from Denver City to start a township that is known today as Old Colorado City. Formed from ancient sedimentary river beds of deep-red, white, and pink sandstone, the rock formations located in Garden of the Gods reveal millions of years of history from the fossils of dinosaurs that once walked the front range of the Rocky Mountains to the petroglyphs of ancient Native American tribes. Garden of the Gods is open year round and offers free admission to anyone who may be traveling to or through Colorado.
