It is a typical plant of tropical America, properly from Mexico and Central America. Its cultivation, with the step of the time, spread by almost all the islands of the Antilles and the Bahamas and in countries of South America like Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru. Apparently, during the conquest and colonization of America, it was taken by the Spanish explorers to the Philippine Islands and also to Africa, Nigeria, where it was easily adapted being, at present, a natural plant of those lands.

When they ripen they are of a red wine color, Traditionally it is consumed as fresh fruit for its pleasant flavor and nutritional value. It is also used in the preparation of juices, jellies, vinegars, compotes, preserves, chichas and alcoholic beverages.
