♥ June Lily, how I love thee. Please don't die because of me. ♥

Perhaps you enjoy what you do to me, dear Lily of June. I watch you break through the ground in April and I wait longer than a full month to nearly die as I see your petals take the stage in my back yard.

So delicate in the morning sun, your deep golden yellow hue is richer then than any other time of the day. I can almost feel the warmth in your petals as I try not to touch them out of fear that I might accidentally stunt your growth or outright kill you.

Why do my thoughts take me to this puzzling state of worry? Because of the fact that it is a real danger in caves with stalactites and stalagmites.. touch the wrong thing and the oils in your fingertips will react with the water in such a way that it will slow down the growth process of the formation, or maybe even stop it from growing forever.

I was caving with a friend one time and he told me not to touch the hanging rock formations, the ones dripping with water.. because the oils in my fingers would make them stop growing. But my fascination and recklessness took over my mind and I touched one of them. Ever so softly, but he became very angry with me and wouldn't speak to me for about an hour afterward. (Who really knows if the fact is even true? No one lives long enough to find out. Even so, better not to risk it. You don't need that on your conscience like I've tainted my own. It's hard to live with.)

So, anyway... I always worry that this law of nature exists with other things and we just haven't learned the truth of the matter yet. perhaps if I touch a lily petal, it won't be as radiant the next day. Could that happen? I don't know. Can you prove it doesn't happen? Yes. It would only take some scientific studying, but have I done that? No. Have other people?

Whoa. So I just did a quick google search, and even though I've done this search in the past, I never received any real results before, but today I have found something.

I have stumbled across a scientific study that has concluded that the human touch, in some cases, causes a wildly alarming reaction from some plant species. Look at this information:

When James Cahill was studying biology at the University of Pennsylvania a few years ago, he was shocked to learn that some of the plants he had been studying out in the field had died. About half of them, to be precise.

That's not exactly the sort of thing a budding ecologist wants to see, so he took it up with his faculty advisor, Brenda Casper. Much to his surprise, Casper said she had seen the same thing with some of the plants she had been studying.

... About half of them, to be precise. All it takes to kill some plants is the touch of the human hand, according to their research, published in the February issue of the journal Ecology.

Noooooo, my darlings! Now what do I do? Fair Lillies of June!! Daisies of Summer! Roses of Spring! Trees of my Yard!!! I have to go ponder the meaning of life and the damning powers of human touch now, and try not to ever tarnish the world's beauty again.

Life is a gamble, especially if you're a plant. Hide from the giants, my dear beauties. We'll wreck you forever and we won't even know we've done so.

Sweet Lily in the evening sun.
Reward us when the day is done.
Your haunting magic lights my way.
Please, live to see another day.
Dear, do not let me damn you.
Fate cursed this world around you.
But I'm so glad I've found you.

Credits: I wrote that little poem just now. The lily photos are mine, I shot them in my garden with my actual camera. How many people use real cameras anymore? Endangered art. Cell phones killed the film stars. The film stars have always been the cameras. But Cameras don't need film anymore. What is life? I do not know.

wow that was a great thought provoking read , the poem at the end is really deep, lovely stuff well done :)

Beautiful post Serena! I love lilies! and my Asiatic Lily are now beginning to bud! They are beautiful and only stand 12 inches tall. I never knew that touching some flowers could kill them? Really interesting studies!
Thanks again for a lovely post.
Darren 🌸

Lilies are my favorite flowers! Especially tiger lilies! And I'm not a very good green thumb... in fact I've killed most plants that people have gotten me over the years. But my step-mom bought me some lilies to plant in my new flower garden and I was surprised when the came up!!! They are almost ready to bloom and I do the same thing... "Just don't touch them, and they will live..." Haha! Beautiful post and poem!

Well it depends on how much oil you have on your hands.. wash your hands before entering into the cave! haha... I'm joking... but yes...
the oil on your hands will stay on the stalagmites once you touch them, like small fingertips and oil repels water with the minerals so it prevents the minerals to stick there.

There are wonderful humans beings that are worried about touching them... and then there is this shit

a beautiful yellow flower... I will try not to touch them ;)
Beautiful post, well formatted too :)

You are so beautiful my friend. Reading your posts give great insight on who you are and what you reflect upon. The very things that are most important, you shine light upon it. Thank you for this as you are different from the rest and that is what this world needs, what I need. My hat's off to you as you keep being yourself. Much love and respect to you!

Your photos are amazing btw. Love the last picture with the sun shining through <3

As always an amazing post and food for thoughts. I agree with @hedac that your formatting is excellent and consistent all through your posts... I need to learn how to improve, but that's another issue, the poem is beautiful... sometimes we touch something and we spoil it... :( . Did you know if you hold a frog the substances in your skin can also make them sick?

Lovely post and reflection Serena,
Lilies are indeed beautiful and delicate, but so is your touch... if it's true that their beauty and your touch cannot coexist... then there must be a mistake in the fabric of nature itself.

Touching nature is in our nature! I admire people that are such good stewards and guardians of the planet... and maybe we have evolved to a state of an outsider... but i'm also with Dr. Ian Malcolm's abs when hes said "Life will find a way"...

There once was a unique plant I found in Argentina, I plucked a piece of it and brought it home with me, and then forgot it inside my suitcase for 4 months... when I got it out, it was still green, I put it in a glass cup, added water, and it started to grow... it dried several times and then came back to life, and is still thriving (now with babies)... Maybe nature is strong...

...maybe if things didn't touch each other and made a mess, there wouldn't even be life to begin with.
