I once new a person who liked to use an email that started: [email protected]. Can't remember what the something was and I guess it's better so he doesn't get lots of spam. Or perhaps spam would be a good thing for someone who uses that kind of email address for everything. A very funny person he was. Or is, but as I said, I once new him, not that much anymore.
Anyway, he sometimes wondered why he hasn't had that much job offers or replies from those places that he sent e-mail to. A contact or anything. People used to say to him that it's always hard, you have to send several hundred mails and call after to get one proper respond or an interview. People were nice to him with their answers. Some people also wondered politely if he used that same address for everything. He said yes.
Uh. Last time I saw some update or something from him in LinkedIn, he had changed his e-mail. Good for him.
Did you know that the capital city of Finland is Helsinki? Well, if you didn't, you do now. Did you also know that it's really common in Finland to give all the city or town workers (or for the workers in any bigger company) an email that is in the form: [email protected]. So, as the Helsinki city's pages are www.hel.fi, the emails of all their workers are like this: [email protected]. It lacks a letter L, but I guess you know where the e-mails actually go if you contact someone who works at the city of Helsinki.
So all the landscape workers or educational workers can use an email provided by the city.
But the bishop of Helsinki doesn't use it. Perhaps for obvious reasons or perhaps because in Finland the state officially is separated from the church. Statistically the largest religious groups are Evangelical Lutheran church and Orthodox church. Those aren't official state religions, but the smaller religious groups could see things differently. The bishop of Helsinki is from the Evangelical Lutheran church and everyone knows who we are talking about if someone refers to the bishop of Helsinki.
The Evangelical Lutheran church has it's own website: www.evl.fi. And yes, you guessed right, the emails of the workers there are: [email protected]. Again it lacks one letter, but I think you know what's really going on there.
Thank god the bishop of Helsinki diocese has a proper job also.
He is a stand up comedian. Or perhaps more a sketch writer nowadays.

I know a Hungarian researcher with with first name Istvan and last name Kiss. At conferences they always abbreviate the first name by the first letter of the first which is quite unfortunate in his case. :D
I got confused reading what was first and what was last and what went where, but if you mean I. Kiss, that's not that unfortunate. That's called: "Start a conference with a smile!" :)
I once knew a girl name Mari Tapani and her name was quite unfortunate in the school years. She hated it because Mari is a girls name, but also Marita. And if you say the name quickly it sounds like the space is in the wrong place: Marita Pani, and that translated is Marita fucked. (not like screwed up but screwed someone). And all the childish students always laughed at her name. :(
Marita Pani seems much worse than I. Kiss. Here is another poorly chosen name:

Its only hell during winter. That's true for Finland in general ;)

I thought it was hot in hell. But if it's true that Finland is hell on earth at winter time, I guess all the things that are referred: "only when the hell freezes over", are now true. True in Finland. At winter time.

I wouldn't know. I'm not religious and I don't believe in heaven or hell after life. Only heaven or hell in this life. That you yourself and / or other people create for you.
And in life hell is sometimes a concept and sometimes a real place. So in this case, what makes Helsinki and Finland hell during the winter?

Interesting pieces of information. I had a friend from Finland, a tattoo artist... but he couldn't make it over here, so he went back to Finland.
He told me that you guys don't have words like "please"... and that the people are very rough, as if they are mad about something all the time. Do you confirm that information?
Well, instead of please, we use thank you (kiitos) or here you are (ole hyvä). May I have more please? Saisinko lisää kiitos? Step right in please. Astukaa sisään, olkaa hyvä. And the words here you are (olkaa hyvä) word for word translation from Finnish back to English is: be so good, so it's more than just here you are when you're giving something to someone or responding to thank you. So I would say that we have couple of words for please. We can also add more letters (isi) to certain words so that it sounds even more polite.
"Saanko lisää?" May / can I have more?
"Saisinko lisää?" May I please have more?
Stereotyping! My favorite thing to do!
Perhaps these can lighten your wonderings:
First of all there's a song. I wont bother you with the the Finnish words, but the translation of the chorus goes: "A snot-nosed youngster will become a better man than a boy laughing at nothing."
It means you are taught not to laugh in vane. Not to smile in vane. If someone you do not know walks towards you in the street and smiles, there's only two possible options: the person walking to you is mentally insane or the person is laughing at your bad hair / face day.
Second thing is that when encountering hardship (cold weather / debt / death / anything that pisses people off or makes them sad), you are taught to just suck it up.
Third thing is that there's this saying: "Silence is golden." So it means it's better to just shut up. Also third thing is that Finns like their space. So when ever they see someone else out there in the streets, they think that person is too close. Because they can see them. So that makes Finns mad. Encountering other people in their personal space.
Fourth thing is that there's a book called: Eniten vituttaa kaikki. = The thing mostly pissing me off is everything.
But, if you come here when it's summer and hotter than usual, like last summer was, or you can calculate the three days that during this three month lasting summer are going to have the temperature over 25°C, you can see nothing but happy people with barely nothing on. Why are Finns so rough, as if they are mad about something all the time?

I didn't even mention everyone that I know / think I know are Finns. ;) Only the most active ones.
Finns only appear pissed off. They are quite nice beneath a neutral expression. Additionally the language is not exactly vibrant. That underscores the unfriendly appearance.
I find them to be delightful - all year round.
But you will only notice that when you get to know them a little more.
Full disclosure: I only drop by from time to time. Only during summer. Had to learn it the hard way

That's what a non Finnish speaker would be expected to say.
Impossible task, but with several attempts, lures and tricks before the pissed off Finn pushes you away, could theoretically happen in some cases.
