A Scholarly Analysis of the works of Aubrey Drake Graham - Comedy Open Mic Round 26

Lord Aubrey Drake Graham is the artist more informally known as Drake. This master of verse strings words like a poet. The following is a scholarly analysis of his three masterpieces.

Hotline Bling

A poignant ode to technology and how it destroys relationships. In the start of the relationships communication between the lovers was easy and frequent. But then one of them leaves the city and it goes into the pathos how long distance relationships cannot be maintained. The girl changes and becomes more of an extrovert. The man laments his loss. How she used to send him the modern version of a pigeon but now she scarcely gives a thought to him. A rival has claimed his throne and is trying to change her.

The chorus combines a repetitive rhyme and rhythm emphasizing the poet's loss and obsession with his lady love.

A haunting portrayal of modern life and communication which is bringing the world closer but ironically increasing the loneliness of a man whose phone doesn't ring and the supposedly superficially attractive lady has left him.

2.In My Feelings -

It is a neo- classical form of poetry in which the poet is trying to convince his beloved of his true intentions and love. He is trying to get her on the journey to life and ride beside him.

The lady however doth protest too much. She doesn’t respond which turns our poet to another prospective mate. He admires her shopping prowess. Also, the fact that she disregards champagne and would rather go for a lowly cognac. Here our our poet makes the mistakes of telling the lady she’s special because he knows so many girls...that aren’t.

The poet is running out of options and the girls are plain running. Now he just wants his property back. He wants them to bring his ass ( an inferior member of the horse family).

There is no resolution to the ass situation but the poet does part by reiterating that he’s being real, something that Edgar Allan Poe also emulated in his poetry.

This is a modern example of cavalier poetry that explores the contemporary courting scene and it’s inherent fickleness.

  1. God’s Plan

One might be forgiven for thinking this a hymn. It is in fact, the poet’s utmost belief in the plan laid out for him that he chants it to good effect.

But it has noir undertones of people imposing on the poet’s calm and generous nature. He does not like being woken up at 6 for a cuddle. This kind of behaviour has disillusioned him.

In this piece of art, the poet also throws grammar out of the window establishing a new way of writing that uses bad grammar to emphasize his angst. Reminds me of ee cummings.

He loves his bed and mother, not necessarily in that order. The next line is an offshoot into chemistry and how the poet can convert oxygen to ozone. This is his stance against global warming by satirically mocking himself as a representative of the rich.

It is worthwhile to notice the poet can spell God.

How are we so lucky to be born in a century when this magnificent artist existed?
God’s Plan.

What do you think Drake meant when he penned the iconic phrase, "pump that ass, pump that ass, pump that ass, pump that ass, pump that ass..."?

I'm imagining a helium pump and ass bursting

YES I'm glad that I'm not the only one scratching my head over this song. I think this is the song that made me decide that I couldn't listen to pop music stations anymore. But seriously, wtf is he talking about? I feel like an old person trying to make sense of modern music, but instead I think modern music just has no sense at all, but there's a generation somewhere so dumb that if an artist says a word like "oxygen" in their song then it makes them the new smart person for everyone to follow.
