Homage, plagiarism or laziness-- In comic book covers?
In my previous post, I wrote about some mexican artists who went beyond mere homage to a great cover or image NOT of their authoring. This, speaking of comic books, of course!
This is a very special case, because here we have not one but several ocassions where the artist took big liberties with the work from others. Don't get me wrong, this practice is/was common with many artists here.
This is Kaliman # 1, circa 1965:
Now take a look at this cover, Kaliman # 294:
And this is the image it was taken from, it's Fantastic Four # 56 or whereabouts:
Now, take a look at this one:
Although it's not taken directly from an specific cover, youmight recognize the rocky character!
Its Ben grimm, The Thing, from Marvel's Fantastic Four!
This one, also from Fantastic Four.
It's none other than Galactus! This is the Marvel character:
Finally, and although it's not 100% discernible or recognizable, you might see the uncanny resemblance:
Here, the Marvel Character, Mephisto:
And there are many other instances.
The following images, are, I'm sure, taken from different sources. Kaliman riding a horse, is taken from a very famous Napoleon Bonaparte painting. The tentacled monster, right to the position, is taken from a magazine cover, Eerie or Creepy, or somesuch.
I'll try to find the originals soon.
Thanks for looking and reading my posts!
