Arsenic Lullaby - Illustrations and Xmas stuff

in #comics5 years ago

FIRST AND FOREMOST...I know the Holidays are a tough time of year for many of you out there ( myself included) BUT every year at this time the regular Arsenic Lullaby website is replaced by the ARSENIC LULLABY BOMB SHELTER! and it is full of holiday comics, podcasts, rants, ect for people who dread the holidays ( like me) so if the season starts getting to you...you can hide there!

Speaking of X-mas...

You know what makes a nice X-mas gift? Artwork. Commissions in particular are a fine idea. Getting one from me is an even better idea! Speaking of that, here's a recent one of a character called Big Barda. She's a creation of comic book legend Jack Kirby, after he left Marvel and went to DC comics. He's they guy who originally drew Galactus

( see my illustration of him at this link https://steemit.com/comics/@arseniclullaby/arsenic-lullaby-fantastic-four-galactus-pin-up )

Upon drawing my second Kirby character in a row I noticed a couple of things.
1-his other worldly/alien/inter-dimensional characters have a heavy Aztec influence.
2- he had an amazing ability to draw the same character for several issues without ever really nailing down just what the f*ck he or she looked like. There wasn't drastic differences...but the details would vary.

Here's three samples of the same character drawn by the same guy...

and we have three different ways of drawing her headpiece, three ways of drawing here belt/shorts and does she have circles on her boots or not? I could show you three more picks by him done three other ways...anyway I got the jist of it.

here's some progress shots of my take on Barda.

I'm fairly please with how it turned out.

while we're talking about confusing yourself as to what a character looks like...here's a commission of the Swamp Thing...notice anything wrong?

Manthingdone.jpg

If your answer was "that's not the Swamp Thing, that's the Man-Thing"...you are correct and where the hell where you when I was working on this?! The two characters are pretty similar looking except Swamp Thing has a more human looking face and is from DC comics, while Man-Thing has just bulging eyes and that weird root eyebrow/nose.

This found a home though, as someone else saw it and laid down a few bucks to have it.

ALSO ... on the ole Arsenic Lullaby online store is a buncha other stuff that would make nice gifts ( if you have a weirdo who is hard to shop for ) or if you have no one to shop for...f*ck it, get yourself something nice!

Coupon code - humbug- is good for 25% all holiday season long! and if you want to use crypocurrency or steem, just lemme know!

See you tomorrow

I know nothing of any of these characters, but I still enjoy your drawing of Barda. I also find it great that I get to know them from your art first xD.

Thanks! #comics She has a red costume also that is basically just a swim suite with a fancy belt, but some how when Kirby drew it, it seem interesting and alien.

I just read the entire Miracle Man series (as a digital book) and loved it. Kirby's art has a charm to it, which I really appreciate, even with his inconsistencies and sometines bizarre anatomy. I've just started reading his Eternals collection, and THAT book is all about the Aztec influences. And, I really like your artwork, too!!! Great stuff...

I didn't know much about Miracle Man before getting this commission. Speaking of non Marvel Kirby work-I keep meaning to find a collection of his work on "The Demon"...any ideas on a good place to start with that?

The series was fairly recently re-released in both paperback and for digital (Comixology) for about $20.00 , available through Amazon. I haven't read Demon for a few decades, but I remember liking it. (It's on my list to buy.) Pretty much anything by Kirby is going to be solid, if slightly goofy. Miracle Man was great. The complete series is collected in one book and it's odd, silly, freakish sci-fi fun.

I'll track that down, thanks! I can't remember why I liked Demon...like much of Kirby's work, it just (as you said) has a certain charm

Your #comics drawings are always really neat, Doug :) Love 'em

The headdress reminds me of sphinxes... but that's probably cuz I have zero knowledge about aztec stuff :3

Also Manthing is now a thing I know about. Neat.

Thanks #comics and you know about Swamp Thing too! since they are essentially the same character. Kinda like Mr. Ferley from Threes Company and Kramer from Seinfeld
