Why Wokeness Isn't All Liberal

in #commentary6 years ago (edited)

Today's brand of "wokeness" lies in seeing problems rather than solving them. I say "rather than" because these "problems" are things like the pink tax, cultural appropriation, and racist hotel shampoo. It may not seem like it, but this brand of "wokeness" isn't new. A group of Jewish radicals believed that attempting to live in a mixed society would lead to a repeat of the Holocaust and that segregating themselves from others and moving to Israel was the solution to their problem. They saw dissenters as ignorant or traitors to their race/religion as well.

People associate wokeness with liberalism, but conservatives are becoming increasingly "woke" in this political climate. The anti-SJW community started out as people who were sick of the SJW way of thinking, but it later devolved into a "safe space" of its own where people need to share the same opinions about things like media and politics or risk being a cucked soyboy libtard. These hardline dividers in politics leave little room for nuance and instead promote the notion that the "other side" must be defeated at all costs.

Even basic fact-checking can elicit angry responses on social media because, if the problem's not as big as everyone makes it out to be, you're not doing it right. For example, gun violence has decreased significantly since the early 1990s, yet it seems more frequent because it's all over the news and the Internet. Wokeness focuses on the perception of a problem rather than its solution, which is why it is refreshing to see people like Kyle Kashuv who are actively working on solutions to a problem rather than blowing it out of proportion.

Wokeness is not a political stance, but a state of mind. Every political branch has it whether they're proud or ashamed of it. If you want to see an example of what I'm talking about, just check out the deepstate tag on Steemit. It's riddled with conspiracy theories and paranoia about all forms of government, especially government actions. At the end of the day, people will try to exaggerate problems without offering useful solutions to those problems and that needs to change.
