Today I learned that many companies intentionally sabotage their products so they can sell them cheaper.

For example, the cheap version of the Intel 486 processor began its life as the expensive version, but another step in the production process neutralized some of the processor's capabilities.

Similarly, in the 1980s IBM decided to add five different chips to its printer to create a cheaper version with twice as fast a print rate.

Thus, the company can contact two different audiences without establishing another assembly line.
