This is my entry into @breezin's For the Love of Kids Competition #2.

This story will be very different, I think, as it is meant to be for children and of a fairly short length. Let me try it out!

The Fawn

Casey was a little girl of only ten years old.

She was very excited to go visit her aunt and uncle who lived on a farm near the forest. She had read all the books and seen all the television programs about the forest.

Mom and Dad had shown her on the internet what this place looked like where she would be spending her summer vacation.

When she got to the farm she was very much welcomed, and Casey's aunt made them peach pie. But soon Casey got very bored.

Her Aunt was always in the yard, tending to the cows and chickens they kept. Her uncle was even busier, mending fences, tilling the land and driving up and down the fields in search of troubles.

Casey found it quite boring in the farmhouse. Her aunt and uncle did not have fancy things. There was only an old radio. There were no computers. There were no cell phones. There was not even a television that she could watch!

Casey began to wander out around the farm. There was not much that she could play with, but she did see that the forest was right next to the back fence of the farm. A small path led out into the forest.

Under the trees there was cool shade, protecting Casey from the hot, hot sun. She soon began to find amazing things!

There were squirrels in the trees! There were flowers and bees!
There were supple fern and old oak! There were streams filled with toads that would croak!
And soon, because she was without any fear, Casey saw the most wonderful thing of all: a little baby deer.

The fawn was grazing in the brush, nibbling on this and that.

Casey walked closer quietly but with a very wide smile. The fawn looked up and did not run away. The deer just flicked its ears back and forth and sniffed.

Casey held up her collection of wildflowers to the fawn who walked slowly towards her. To Casey, this was a most magical thing and it only cost her a few succulent daisies.

After that Casey was never bored, she had made a friend. She visited the Fawn every day.

That summer Casey learned something very important: No matter how many videos she watched or how many books she read, none of that was ever the same as going into the forest and seeing it herself.

And a little later Casey also realized that she would never have gone into the forest if there had been a television in her aunt and uncle’s farmhouse.

The End

And so my story is done. A story with a message. Did it need to have a message? I don't know. But I think I like it. I will print it out and give it to my kids to read! Hahaha!
