We investigate different mechanical effects which accompany the nerve pulse propagation by using mathematical modeling. The propagation process is composed by three connected phenomena: (i) the action potential (electrical signal) which is usually considered when nerve pulses are discussed, (ii) the mechanical wave propagating in the biomembrane and (iii) the pressure wave in the axoplasm inside the axon. The main goal of the present study is to investigate numerically how the mechanical wave is generated by the action potential and how the characteristics of the system are reflected in the emerging wave ensemble. %the existence and characteristics of the mechanical wave influence the parameters of an action potential part of the wave ensemble. The key characteristics for the coupled model system are: (i) the velocity of the peak of the mechanical pulse is associated with the velocity of the action potential regardless of the sound velocity value in the lipid bi-layer, (ii) the velocity of the front and the shape of the mechanical wave depends on sound velocity in the lipid bi-layer, (iii) the shape of the mechanical wave can have an effect on the velocity and shape of the action potential.

THMC instabilities and the Multiphysics of Earthquakes (1906.01116v1)

2019-06-03

Theoretical approaches to earthquake instabilities propose shear dominated instabilities as a source mechanism. Here we take a fresh look at the role of possible volumetric instabilities preceding a shear instability. We investigate the phenomena that may lead to earthquake instabilities using coupling of Thermo-Hydro-Mechano-Chemical (THMC) reaction-diffusion equations in a THMC diffusion matrix. We show that the off-diagonal cross-diffusivities can give rise to cross-diffusion slow (no inertia) pressure waves and propose that a resonance phenomenon of constructive interference triggers the seismic moment release.

Displaced phase-amplitude variables for waves on finite background (1906.00959v1)

Wave amplification in nonlinear dispersive wave equations may be caused by nonlinear focussing of waves from a certain background. In the model of nonlinear Schr"odinger equation we will introduce a transformation to displaced phase-amplitude variables with respect to a background of monochromatic waves. The potential energy in the Hamiltonian then depends essentially on the phase. Looking as a special case to phases that are time independent, the oscillator equation for the signal at each position becomes autonomous, with the change of phase with position as only driving force for a spatial evolution towards extreme waves. This is observed to be the governing process of wave amplification in classes of already known solutions of NLS, namely the Akhemediev-, Ma- and Peregrine-solitons. We investigate the case of the soliton on finite background in detail in this Letter as the solution that describes the complete spatial evolution of modulational instability from background to extreme waves.

Exact travelling solution for a reaction-diffusion system with a piecewise constant production supported by a codimension-1 subspace (1906.00484v1)

Anton S. Zadorin

2019-06-02

A generalisation of reaction diffusion systems and their travelling solutions to cases when the productive part of the reaction happens only on a surface in space or on a line on plane but the degradation and the diffusion happen in bulk are important for modelling various biological processes. These include problems of invasive species propagation along boundaries of ecozones, problems of gene spread in such situations, morphogenesis in cavities, intracellular reaction etc. Piecewise linear approximations of reaction terms in reaction-diffusion systems often result in exact solutions of propagation front problems. This article presents an exact travelling solution for a reaction-diffusion system with a piecewise constant production restricted to a codimension-1 subset. The solution is monotone, propagates with the unique constant velocity, and connects the trivial solution to a nontrivial nonhomogeneous stationary solution of the problem. The properties of the solution closely parallel the properties of monotone travelling solutions in classical bistable reaction-diffusion systems.

Self-powered shape-transforming membranes: an active matter approach to soft robotics (1906.00386v1)

We present the first example of an autonomous, extended, shape-transforming sheet made from a gel that shrinks and swells in response to the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. BZ waves traveling within the gel induce periodic flapping of the sheets. We compute the relationship between the reference Gaussian curvature and the reaction phase using the theory of non-Euclidean elasticity and show that this quantitatively predicts the evolving three-dimensional shape. We account for deviations from the purely geometric theory due to finite-thickness effects. This system demonstrates behavior reminiscent of biological organisms: autonomous shape changes of a soft slender structure powered by chemical free energy extracted from the environment. Our results constitute an important step towards the realization of autonomous soft machines.

Exactly Solvable And Integrable Systems

Quasi-periodic solutions to the negative-order KdV hierarchy (1906.01305v1)

Jinbing Chen

2019-06-04

A complete algorithm is developed to deduce quasi-periodic solutions for the negative-order KdV (nKdV) hierarchy by using the backward Neumann systems. From the nonlinearization of Lax pair, the nKdV hierarchy is reduced to a family of backward Neumann systems via separating temporal and spatial variables. The backward Neumann systems are shown to be integrable in the Liouville sense, whose involutive solutions yield the finite parametric solutions of nKdV hierarchy. The negative-order Novikov equation is given, which specifies a finite-dimensional invariant subspace of nKdV flows. By the Abel-Jacobi variable, the nKdV flows are integrated with Abel-Jacobi solutions on the Jacobi variety of a Riemann surface. Finally, the Riemann-Jacobi inversion of Abel--Jacobi solutions is studied, from which some quasi-periodic solutions to the nKdV hierarchy are obtained.

Exact results from the geometry of couplings and the effective action (1906.00984v1)

We invent a method that exploits the geometry in the space of couplings and the known all-loop effective action, in order to calculate the exact in the couplings anomalous dimensions of composite operators for a wide class of integrable -models. These involve both self and mutually interacting current algebra theories. We work out the details for important classes of such operators. In particular, we consider the operators built solely from an arbitrary number of currents of the same chirality, the composite operators which factorize into a chiral and an anti-chiral part, as well as those made up of three currents of mixed chirality. Remarkably enough, the anomalous dimensions of the former two sets of operators turn out to vanish. In our approach, loop computations are completely avoided.

Singularity Analysis of a Variant of the Painlev{é}--Ince Equation (1906.00688v1)

Amlan K Halder, Andronikos Paliathanasis, PGL Leach

2019-06-03

We examine by singularity analysis an equation derived by reduction using Lie point symmetries from the Euler--Bernoulli Beam equation which is the Painlev'{e}--Ince Equation with additional terms. The equation possesses the same leading-order behaviour and resonances as the Painlev'{e}--Ince Equation and has a Right Painlev'{e} Series. However, it has no Left Painlev% '{e} Series. A conjecture for the existence of Left Painlev'{e} Series for ordinary differential equations is given.

A variational perspective on continuum limits of ABS and lattice GD equations (1811.01855v2)

Mats Vermeeren

2018-11-05

A pluri-Lagrangian structure is an attribute of integrability for lattice equations and for hierarchies of differential equations. It combines the notion of multi-dimensional consistency (in the discrete case) or commutativity of the flows (in the continuous case) with a variational principle. Recently we developed a continuum limit procedure for pluri-Lagrangian systems, which we now apply to most of the ABS list and some members of the lattice Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. We obtain pluri-Lagrangian structures for many hierarchies of integrable PDEs for which such structures where previously unknown. This includes the Krichever-Novikov hierarchy, the double hierarchy of sine-Gordon and modified KdV equations, and a first example of a continuous multi-component pluri-Lagrangian system.

Re-factorising a QRT map (1906.00501v1)

Nalini Joshi, Pavlos Kassotakis

2019-06-02

A QRT map is the composition of two involutions on a biquadratic curve: one switching the -coordinates of two intersection points with a given horizontal line, and the other switching the -coordinates of two intersections with a vertical line. Given a QRT map, a natural question is to ask whether it allows a decomposition into further involutions. Here we provide new answers to this question and show how they lead to a new class of maps, as well as known HKY maps and quadrirational Yang-Baxter maps.
