Welcome to the VDUX Haiku Contest!!!

Come one, come all, give me your best 17 syllables! Those interpid few who accept this challenge could win 1.5 SBDs for 30 seconds of work. That's 180 SBDs per hour!

Read below for more about the contest instructions, how to participate, awards, and how I'll select a winner.

(Note to all waiting to hear winners of the most recent contest: stay tuned!)

Contest Instructions

Write a haiku about snow.

This must be a one-stanza, traditional 5-7-5 haiku like the ones described here: http://www.kidzone.ws/poetry/haiku.htm. Here’s an example:

Cold clouds bring the snow.

Warm sun reclaims the heavens.

Water serves them both.

You may submit multiple haikus, but PLEASE make each haiku its own reply. Each one will be considered a separate entry.

This theme comes from @theironfelix, who's getting .005 SBDs from me just for the idea. If you have any suggestions for future contests, reply below!

How to Participate

  1. Reply below with your haiku. Deadline: 11:59 pm UTC, December 7, 2018.
  2. Upvote this post. Deadline: 11:59 pm UTC, December 7, 2018.

That's it! But...

You should also resteem this post to increase the winner's prize and give yourself some free exposure! You can participate without resteeming -- I don't give preference -- but if you do resteem, it only helps you.

Also, post your entry on your own blog! Mention @vdux and I'll give you an upvote and resteem your post.

And, collect a bonus point for each person you tag in your contest entry. More players, more prizes, more fun!

Awards

Winner gets:

  • 1.5 SBD
  • One free resteem from me for any post. (You choose the post. There's no time limit but I reserve the right to refuse resteem any post I consider offensive or indecent -- I'll simply ask you for a different, non-offensive post.)

One runner-up gets:

  • One free resteem from me for any post. (You choose the post. There's no time limit but I reserve the right to refuse to resteem any post I consider offensive or indecent -- I'll simply ask you for a different, non-offensive post.)

How I Will Select the Winner

Within 2 days after the deadline, I will read all entries and choose a winner and runner-up. While I'll take upvotes into consideration, my selection will reflect my personal preference based on the entries you submit.

Feel free to reuse a haiku from the past and write as many as you want!

Also, give congrats to all who've participated in my previous contests -- the list keeps growing!

FEEL THE HAIKU!!!

Sort:

Kittens paw touches
the cold white powder. Snow is
a new sensation

Happy cat!

It is frikkin' cold
But it will melt tomorrow
That's Colorado

But not before you ski, right? I hear that's what people do in CO...

I've never been skiing or snowboarding in my life. That's rich people sport. XD

I know the pain...
I'm in Wyoming - of course here it likes to blow away.

Oh my gosh once we got caught in a whiteout blizzard driving to Laramie. By the time it cleared, we came upon a semi that had jacknifed across the freeway, and the driver was too panicked to turn so that people could pass for like 45 minutes. Their company hadn't provided them with chains for their tires! We found this out because other truckers were trying to calm her down and get her to turn the truck, and giving the rest of us updates on what had happened. Luckily no one was hurt.

That's really scary! I think Laramie gets it worse than here in Casper, but it's not a trucker's paradise here either - when there are wind advisories, so many think it doesn't apply to them... they often end up on their sides.

Our three story apartment building used to rock in the wind in Fort Collins. I once was walking on the sidewalk and was blown into the street! The wind up there is crazy.

Our introduction to Wyoming wind:
We moved in two years ago on the solstice - literally.
The day after Christmas, we went and watched a movie as a special treat. As we walked the two blocks from the bus station to the theater, the wind blew off our knitted hats - off two of us. One, we were able to rescue (daughter ran after it - catching it just before it blew into the street), my hat wasn't so lucky.

I have lived a lot of places, including the coast - and I can say that I've never lived in a windier place!

Snow, like drawn covers,
Blankets the earth with silence.

😄😇😄

@creatr

Vivid. Nice picture -- did you take that?

No, I did not... I found it on an open-source website, and thought it matched the mood of my haiku.

Footprints left behind
A winding trail in the snow
Leading a way home

That is really lovely. Evocative of a mood and also visual. Nice going!

Ah, well done. And a life lesson, too.

crystallized water
a moment preserved, drifting
lost between the rest

No two the same!

I love “a moment preserved”!

Wherever I go
My feet are swallowed by snow
White, clean and lovely

I like this one. Visceral. 😎

Thank you! I love writing these. No pressure, just fun and imagining.

Happily so, then?

Yes! You bring happiness when you inspire us to write haiku

Thank you for running another delightful contest.

Something to do when
the mind wanders, write haiku
for vdux snow poem

When this endless rain
Finally turns to fine snow
I will jump for joy

That cat is better than a haiku...or at least one of my haikus :)

Cats > Haiku

Snow falls in the night
A Geisha face in the dark
Beauty is out there

Welcome to the contest! I liked the haiku -- can you change the first line to five syllables? Stickler, I know...I use the strict traditional haiku format so everybody has the same rules.

Opps.. all fixed now😊
