Hello my fellow steemians; this is @hermannsol and today i was doing a little kind of research on corruption and it was a very sad moment for me asan African to see what corruption has turned our beloved continent into.

Ask any African you meet on a crosswalk from any African country about the problem that is affecting their country most and 3 in every 5 will mention Corruption as an answer.
Corruption is a world problem affecting most countries in the world but in Africa, it is almost like a wild disease affecting every generation and if nothing is done about it, then the coming generation will have to suffer a worst fate.
Why do i say this? We can already see the level at which Africa is: development is almost stagnant, getring into more debts, poverty rate increasing, terrorism and riots, poor governance etc and if things keep deteriorating at this pace, then what will happen in the next coming years will be unthinkable.

What is Corruption?

Corruption can be seen as a social, legal, economic and political concept. It is a phenomenon that has several aspects in its definition but for the purpose of better understanding and clarity, we can see it as "use of public office/funds for private gain".

The root causes of coreuption cna vary from place to place depending on the political, social and economic and cultural circumstances.
In Africa, some of the identifiable causes of corruption include: Poor governance, politics of the belly, greed, lack of accountability and transparency, weak judicial system, concentration of power.

Analyzing the problem

Corruption is on the rise in Africa which is no surprise actually seeing what happens right infront of you daily. 9n our highways, public offices, schools, enterprises etc. I usually laugh a lot when i think about a Nigerian police man on the highway and their lullaby of 20Naira and a Cameroonian police man with theirs of 1000fcfa. In Cameroon here, it is as if it is useless to write any public concours because all they spots must have been paid before the concours are written.
Notwithstanding, some African countries are trying to curb down corruptiom in their states while others are doing a bad job at it.

From the above data, we can see that countries like Burkina faso, ivory coast and mali are all doing a good job in their fight against corruption while others like South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria are doing quite bad and to be honest i am surprised Cameroon is not on one the list of worst performing countries hahaha.
Well every year, a transparency corruption percentage index is drafted showing the corruption statues of all countries in the World on 100.
Most African countries fall between a score of 9-40
on 100 which is terrible and there are countries like New Zealand that have a score of 90/100. Wow almost corruption free.

As expected we see the worst scores from African countries who fall from 9-40% while most developed countries have an index of 70-90%.
Africa is making very minimal progress in the fight against corruption and this is dragging us into poverty, under-development and economic stagnation.

In most African countries, the most corrupt institutions are the judiciary, military and public institutions.
Most especially the military who have really lost it when it comes to corruption. Their bellies comes first before their duty to protect its citizens.Police officers always on our highways not to do their jobs but to collect tips from civilians. It has become a norm here that even a kid in elementary school knows it.

Below are statistics collected in South Africa which is currently the most corrupt country in Africa of the most corrupt institutions in the country and its no surprise seeing who is at the top.

Impacts of corruption in Africa

One does not even need to look far or think to much to see what corruption is doing to our beloved continent Africa.

  1. Corruption affects investment.
  2. It leads to misallocation of resources and expenditure.
  3. Under-development.
  4. Economic stagnation.
  5. Poverty. The rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
  6. Abuse of human rights.

These and many more most especially the danger it poses to the future of our children and the ones yet unborn. It is a problem that must be addressed with all seriousness and you must agree with me that if coeruption is present in any society, that only means good governance is an impossibility. Corruption and poor governance are the two main issues plaguing Africa most.

Coreuption kills and slowly it is killing and destroying so many lives and Africa as a continent.

The solution to this problem

The problem is a very complex one to say and there is no one easy solution to this problem. It will take from every arm of the state: legislative, administrators, policy makers, leaders and they citizens to stand together in the fight against corruption. If not we will make little or no progress at all. It is not a problem that a single entity can solve.
So in that light we will need all hands on deck to move this big ship. The change starts with you and like a great man said

Be the change you want to see in the world

Mohandas gandhi

I will say this fight is yours, it is mine, it is ours to rise up and fight for our future, that of our family friends and children. It is our fight to make Africa great again. Act as an agent of change wherever you find yourself and show others the example.
Let us create one big lovely Africa for all of us.
Thanks for reading...
