"The Morning After" by Richard F. Yates

[This little beastie is ink on reclaimed cardboard with digital embellishments. 2019.]

So..... Concert yesterday at the Oregon Zoo. (I'll write a full post about it in a day or two...) Our tickets for this outdoor event were general admission, so Mariah (the "wife") and I arrived about an hour before the gates opened to the seating area, in the hopes of getting a bit closer than we were last year when we saw Adam Ant and The Fixx. (We did get closer.) BUT!!! Arriving early meant that we had a SLUG of time to wait with nothin' to do...

I decided to sit on the ground, Mariah went off to grab a beer, and I took some recycled cardboard and pens out of my backpack and got to work... Between waiting for our line to start moving, plus the dead time between the various bands, I finished EIGHT drawings yesterday! (The image above is one of the eight.)

UNFORTUNATELY, the difficulty level of our adventure increased dramatically when it started to rain---and I mean it turned into a total DOWNPOUR---as the third band was doing their thing. I assumed that my backpack was waterproof.... No... It turns out that some water DID get into my pack (and, unrelated but still shitty, my bottle of ibuprofen popped open somehow and spilled in the wetness), and subsequently, most of my drawings took some water damage. (All but one...)

After we got home (dripping and soaked), I took all of the cardboard out of my pack, and I laid the drawings out flat to let them dry overnight.

This morning, the cardboard looks dry, and none of the INK ran, which is great! (Sharpies are awesome.) Several of the drawings have some discoloration, but that just adds "visual interest" to the pieces, and as I digitally tweak and color the drawings, I can "fix" the damage, if I want to. Probably won't. We'll see...

And that's my story. Worked on art, watched a cool concert, got wet, cussed a bit when I saw that my backpack let the rain in, and eventually realized that everything turned out fine! Yup...
