Is Facebook Really Becoming Too Powerful?

A few weeks ago, in an op-ed published in the New York Times, Facebook cofounder and former spokesperson, Chris Hughes, argued that Facebook was becoming too powerful. He went further to call for an overhaul of Facebook.

Hughes did not stop there. He further argued that the global influence of Mark Zuckerberg has become overwhelming. This was, according to Hughes, largely attributed to the fact that the Facebook board (that ought to be decision makers) merely plays an advisory role with all the powers concentrated in the hands of Zuckerberg.

And I think Hughes should be taken seriously. Indeed, there is an urgent need to check the excesses of Facebook, especially in the areas of data mining , privacy violations, and security breaches.

With a complete control of the social media space, the influence of Facebook is boundless and that puts the end users at a great risk. Matters become even worse when one imagines that Facebook is planning to launch its own cryptocurrency, Libra. Therefore, there is an urgent need for Facebook to become decentralized.

Of course, the decentralization of Facebook will take powers away from the few and bring it to the masses. Also, the manipulative tendencies of Facebook can be controlled through decentralization. But of course, this will not happen until more scandals involving Facebook comes to light.

It may sound bad, but the idea that Zuckerberg is thinking of adding crypto to Facebook is absurd. For one crypto is still very frowned upon by the government, from which he does seem to be exempt from. It has become such a cesspool and to think of anyone potentially making any money from their hatred and single mindedness is sickening. It may be different in other places, but here it's a grotesque nightmare. Hey that's just an opinion LOL.

I agree that Hughes' words need to be taken into consideration. Zuckerberg is not a nice person. He's proven that especially with how Facebook was started. God forbid if he should do something positive with his money rather than gather toys.

Hahahaha good to know that you also share the opinions expressed in this article. My respect for Mark began to drop when I read that he outsmarted the Winklevoss twins to set up Facebook.

God forbid if he should do something positive with his money rather than gather toys.

That really got me laughing hard. LOL

LOL. He just irks me the arrogant SOB. What bothered me more than the Winklevoss twins is what he did to his friend and co-founder. Used him for money then pretty much spit him out and no intention of paying him back. I'm glad he was sued and had to add the guy's name back to being a co-founder.

I actually have some pretty strong feelings on somethings. This is one of them, if you can't tell.

It is sad to even learn about the issue he had with his friend. Obviously, Mark can't be trusted given his antecedents. Thanks for telling me this. Cheers!
