The United Nations describes the crisis in this area as "one of the most amazing disasters of the 20th century".

Farmers and textile workers are also affected by business practices carried out by some in the conventional cotton industry:

• The largest exporter of cotton to Europe is Uzbekistan. It has been widely documented that state-sponsored child labor is used in cotton fields. There, irresponsible environmental practices have led the United Nations to call Uzbekistan "one of the biggest man-made environmental disasters".

• Child labour in cotton - a worrying concept in itself - could be paid at 1-2 cents per pound of cotton. The pound is paid 50 cents on the world market. In East Africa, trafficking of children to provide child labourers for the cotton fields has been reported.

• It is estimated that there are up to 5 million cases of insecticide poisoning each year among farm workers in developing countries. Poisoning causes symptoms such as vomiting, headaches, memory impairment, confusion, tremors, lack of coordination, seizures, and severe depression. Each year, 20,000 of these cases result in death.
