This is a $500K ARR lending business. It’s nice but not crazy, they would be lucky to raise a small Series A and get a TechCrunch article if this was a fintech startup.

      FlatOutCrypto‏ @flatoutcrypto
The lack of excitement around Maker is crazy to me
I think it's because people focus on the Dai aspect and the fear of that dropping it's peg in stress circumstances and instead ignore the borrowing part - which is also a really huge achievement

Heinrich Lauert‏ @tradingdisaster
Since we are facing a tsunami of stable-coins, here are some explainers from easy and superficial to detailed for those who got thoroughly confused:

and a contrarian piece from a stable-coin hater: https://prestonbyrne.com/2017/12/10/stablecoins-are-doomed-to-fail/ … - he might ultimately be wrong, but he raises some valid points and the failure of @OfficialNuBits to hold their peg shows the dangers. The history of currency pegs in national currencies also is a warning.

Creating a pegged currency will always create structural tensions if you do not simply hold the underlying asses 1:1. There are different strategies to mitigate those tensions, but in the end, people have to have some faith your system will hold the peg, even under stress.

The reason of course is that you cannot simply banish the volatility of your underlying asset, you have to react to it - and since your monetary fire-power is not endless, your system could be overwhelmed. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Wednesday … for a real-world example.

A stable-coin has to have a stable ratio to the underlying asset (d'oh), it has to be robust in the face of stress (black swan events, speculators ganging up to implode the peg), and should be decentralized or we have the trust issues back that crypto was to abolish.

n the age-old art of business bullshit images, I would argue that of this triangle, you can at most have two properties at once:

  • Tether fails the decentralization test

  • @MakerDAO has an emergency valve in the Global Settlement that causes a wind-down of the whole system under extreme stress

  • BitUSD is simply not very stable (historically between $0.75 and $1.60), but has survived for 4 years now, when haters foretold a life-span of weeks

TL/DR: I can see only two kinds of stable-coins survive for long:

  1. centralized ones where the state and/or big banks audit the funds (how ironic)
  2. flexible systems like BitUSD that allow for strong deviations from the target price, but have incentives to get it back on track

Thanks for sharing. EOS has major fundamental problems it shouldn’t have. They literally defeat logic. Given these are by design, I don’t see them getting changed. Admins should reached them out asking to do a Q&A here.

The whole concept of the blockchain is to provide a layer of trust between participants. EOS took that away in order to facilitate various other needs. The problem with that is that defeats the whole purpose of using blockchain and the revolution it brought. This is a core characteristic that sets technology apart and with EOS is gone. Simple as that.

I said it in a different group earlier, but it shows that having a ton of money doesn’t solve these difficult problems, it takes time and smart people

Since the market is down I thought it would be a good time for some FA... Main points on OMG.

Cryptocurrency|Symbol: OmiseGO/ OMG
Major Exchanges: Binance, Bittrex, Huobi, IDAX, Poloniex
Market Cap: 449,482,774
Total Supply: 140,245,398
Current Price: $3,20
Rank: 22
Website: https://omisego.network/

Description & Background:

  • ‘OmiseGO enables financial inclusion and interoperability through the public, decentralized OMG network.’
  • Launched in 2017 by the Asian Payment giant ‘Omise’.
  • Three-layers that constitute OmiseGO’s main framework:
  1. The white-label wallet SDK layer:
It supposed to provide standardized features to digital wallet service providers.
  2. Decentralized exchange (DEX) layer:
They believe that the cost of exchange should be no greater than the cost of maintaining the decentralized network that exchange happens on so they aim to eliminate middlemen. All transactions will be managed on the DEX chain and validated by OMG stakers (PoW), who collectively and dynamically determine the fees that are necessary to keep the network running.
  3. Scalability network mechanism layer:
OmiseGO was designed for the Plasma architecture, which structures blockchain computation into MapReduce function and uses a combination of PoS token bonding and the network security provided by a separate root chain to safely enable unprecedented transaction processing speed.

Value Proposition:
Its focus is to create a decentralized economy which links the gap between 2 billion people without bank account with financial institutions, users and merchants and give them possibility to exchange assets through peer-to-peer payment network that can be used by anyone with a phone without the need of a bank account Omise is based on the Ethereum network, involved in Ethereum’s Plasma. It also focuses on scalability, security, and decentralization.
OmiseGO is developing 2 products:

  1. Digital mobile wallet, which comes with an SDK from Omisego. Allows for peer-to-peer payments for users with smartphones. The wallet will access the plasma network, which similar to the Lighnting network. Plasma is a second layer blockchain protocol scaling solution on top of the root chain being ETH.
OmiseGO wallet is no different than a bank account, except it can store digital assets with 0 deposit risk. E-wallet licences cannot lend out funds contrary to the bank so no minimum balances are required.
  2. From the eWallet shoppers, merchants, payment service providers, and business can connect to the OmiseGO decentralized Exchange (DEX) to send, buy, sell or trade fiat currencies, digital assets, and cryptourrencies. The OmiseGO decentralized exchange will provide multi-asset across chain interoperability that is scalable and secured through PoS consensus mechanism.

Investment Thesis:
Omise- parent company, based in Thailand provides Stripe like payment services for merchants and enterprise businesses in Japan and South East Asia since 2013. OmiseGo wants to be the Stripe of Asia on the blockchain using mobile e-wallet that runs on OmiseGO’s Decentralized Exchange (DEX) by way of blockchain technology. While Omise, the parent company is the main contributor and the main creator of OmiseGO protocol, it is not centrally owned by Omise. Omise will merely move their existing payment services over to the OmiseGO blockchain, what will be beneficial for Omise business.

Essentially problems that OMG aims to solve, are:

  • the ability to transact on different networks,
  • sending, trading, buying and selling fiat currencies or digital assets in an efficient and affordable way,
  • secured storage,
  • greater liquidity for payment channels using other cryptos.
  • Ledger tracking of asset transfer across organizations,
  • Fraud, theft, and manipulation when sending, receiving, and storing fiat currencies and digital assets,
  • An ecosystem with no centralized entity in control or at risk.

Likes:
Partnerships:

  • Omise, parent company, already has over 500 merchants in South East Asia and more on the way.

  • True Money: A privet fintech company based in Thailand and provides e-payment services in South Asia, True Money is a partner and shareholder of Omise, leveraging the companies transacting capabilities and participating in collaboration efforts. TrueMoeny is currently owned by Ascend group, whom recently received an investment from Ant Financial (owned under Alibaba). Services offered include TrueMoney Wallet, WeCard with MasterCard, TrueMoney Cash Card, Kiosk, Express, Payment Gateway, and Remittance. They’re also known for their extensive support of 9000+7’Eleven branches in Thailand. Both Google and Alipay have partnered payment platforms of TrueMoney.

  • McDonald’s Thailand on Sep 2017 was announced by Omise That McDonald’s Thailand picked Omise to be their exclusive payments gateway for the McDpnald’s Thailand website and McDelivery Thailand mobile app.

  • PayBuy- acquired by Omise in July 2017 to capture payment processing market share in Thailand. PaysBuy is one of the 3 largest payment service providers in Thailand.

  • Shinhan Card- OmiseGo has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SinhanCard, an affiliate of the Shinhan Financial Group, a major player in South Korea’s banking and payments arena.

  • Minzuho Financial Group: A financial conglomerate based in Japan and a partner of OmiseGO. Mizuho offers an array of services within retail & corporate banking. They’re considered to be one of three Japanese ‘megabanks’

  • All mentioned partnerships with working and well-established business gives OMG huge advantage over their competition.

  • Team Members:

  • Jun CEO and Founder Omise LTD responsible previously for LIFEmee and Alpha-do.
  • Joseph Poon- creator of Lighting Network Joseph Poon is the co-author of the c White Paper and Plasma. Joseph’s current areas of research involve blockchains scalability, inter-blockchain interaction, token mechanisms, and crypto economic incentives.
  • Vitalik Buterin- Founder and Inventor of ETH
  • Dr. Gavin Wood- co-founder of ETH
  • Julian Zawistowksi- founder of Golum
  • Roger Ver- CEO of BTC/com

Concerns:

  • They compete with 0x, Stellar, Nano, Ethos.
  • They are based on ETH and not sure how the current Ethereum struggle will influence the development of OMG

The concept of dash is the most enticing currency right now, but the damn instamine makes it really difficult for me
by MonoTheMonkey

I think Dash probably could have passed BTC already were it not for the launch problems. Will Evan Duffield ever burn his instamined coins?

The big issue for me is the lack of transparency. He told another miner that the launch definitely wouldn’t happen until the morning. Then launched anyways with a bug in the difficulty algorithm.

I want so bad to buy a masternode. It’s really difficult for me to do so with this lack of transparency during the launch. I know that the coins were publicly traded after the launch at a low price. I also don’t even think an unfair launch would be a problem. So long as it was transparent. Satoshi, after all had a huge advantage solo mining in the beginning of BTC.

How much dash does Duffield own? Let’s assume worst case scenario that he locked up a bunch of master nodes with the instamined dash. He would earn dash for operating the MN’s and thus could continue to buy more MN’s with the dividends.

Dash best performing crypto in August - EXPERIMENT - Tracking Top 10 Cryptocurrencies for One Year (2018) - Month Eight - Overall Down 70%
by Joe-M-4

Dash is best performing in August

tl;dr: The crypto slide continues. Dash is best monthly performer for the first time this year and Stellar, although down 31% from January 1st, is still the best performing crypto of the experiment by far.

Click here for full blog post complete with charts, graphs, and charts of graphs.

The Experiment:
Instead of hypothetically tracking cryptos throughout the year, I made an actual $1000 investment, $100 in each of the Top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap as of the 1st of January 2018. It began as a lazy man's Index Fund (no weighting or rebalancing), but I'm starting to move away from that terminology as things have changed quite a bit since January 1st, 2018 (plus the term "Index Fund" seems to bring out the shills trying to sell their own Crypto Index Fund product).

My experiment is less technical, more fun (for me at least), and hopefully still a proxy for the entire market- or at the very least an interesting snapshot of the 2018 crypto space. I'm trying to keep it simple and accessible for beginners and those looking to get into crypto but maybe not quite ready to jump in yet.

The Rules:
Buy $100 of each the Top 10 cryptocurrencies on January 1st, 2018. Run the experiment 365 days. Hold only. No selling. No trading. Report monthly.

Month/Episode Eight - Down 70%
Remember the hope you felt at the end of July? That we'd finally hit bottom in crypto markets and things were looking up - the only direction to look if you're at the bottom, right?

Costs and fees when using MakerDao with easycdp.com
by timmerwb

I am trying to better understand costs and fees, and where they are charged, when using MakerDao. It seems I have run into surprising losses (~3%), simply for locking up and freeing ETH, but perhaps I do not understand. Perhaps someone can help. Here is my example, where 'X' is the amount of ETH that I used initially.

Using easycdp.com, I opened a CDP with X ETH. This showed up at mkr.tools as having 0.979X PETH collateral. (Why so low?). At this point I drew some DAI, but that is the only draw I have executed.

I then locked in an additional 4X ETH (a total of 5X ETH, again, via easycdp.com), and this showed up as a total of 4.86X PETH (a change of 0.970 from the added amount of ETH).

Shortly after, I then 'freed' 4X ETH (i.e. the amount I used to add collateral to the CDP). 4X ETH was returned to my wallet, but leaving only 0.861X PETH as collateral. This is an effective loss of 0.118X PETH

Do I need pay tax when convert DAI to uSD (in US)?
by fire_free

Just a new comer here. Pardon me if this question been asked before.
My first assumption is DAI is a loan if it's from a CDP, so no tax. Then I realized you could buy DAI from exchange, so maybe tax with this case. How do you think?

      Rich_at_makerdao
There have been numerous threads asking the same question and a great deal of interesting speculation put forward. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure is to hire a well-informed tax professional familiar with your local jurisdiction.

As far as I'm aware, anyone who has done this hasn't reported back with their results.

Idea for and additional stability mechanism for MakerDAO.
by oneaccountpermessage

Most large liquidations happen because the owner of the CDP is not paying attention or has trouble adding to their position in time. Large liquidations cause stress on the system.

One way this could be improved if there are special rules for a dangerzone, say 150% to 200% collateralization.

It could be added to the system that 3rd parties could be allowed to loan collateral to a CDP in the danger zone, at a certain percentage fee per day. It could be made in a way that the fee will increase gradually as the CDP gets closer to the liquidation threshold making it more and more attractive to help out a troubled CDP.

The real owner of the CDP would be motivated to pay back the 3rd party as soon as possible because the interest rate charged could be high depending on risk.

Alchemy Coin Makes Hybrid Car Bet, Teams with Careonchain
Alchemy Coin

Alchemy Coin made a big bet on clean technology as it announced an exclusive arrangement with Careonchain, a researcher and developer of hybrid cars. The deal is an indication that Alchemy Coin continues to find ways to add diversification to its balance sheet ahead of its October Initial Coin Offering and further demonstration of the power of Alchemy’s growing global network.

Alchemy Coin CEO Justin Jung said the deal made sense for his team: “Having strong partners is the key to success in business, and we have found no stronger partner than the Careonchain team. Their vision about clean technologies in the automotive industry is every bit as bold as our attempts to disrupt lending practices around the world. We’re very excited to add Careonchain to the Alchemy network and look forward to decades of growth alongside of them.”

The growth of the electronic vehicle (EV) space, according to global consultancy Accenture, is sharply on the rise: “Despite the current low oil price, global EV sales figures have been growing rapidly: from 36,000 units sold in 2011 to more than 270,000 four years later. However, the market share of EVs as a percentage of the global automotive market in 2015 was only 0.3 percent. An increase to just 3 percent would equate to 2.7 million EVs. This potential for EV uptake, however, varies greatly across domestic markets.”
