1- The Philippines government is building Crypto Valley of Asia, a cryptocurrency and fintech hub similar to the one in the canton of Zug, Switzerland. The estate will be built at the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport in partnership with private property developer Northern Star Gaming & Resorts Inc. The zone is already set to accommodate 25 crypto firms that will operate within the area.

2 - Opera is launching its desktop web browser with built-in crypto wallet functionality. The new desktop version will work by enabling users to connect their desktop browser to their existing crypto wallet-enabled mobile app by scanning a QR code — a system that Opera has been using to synchronize desktop-mobile apps for several years, as for example, with its Whatsapp web client.

3 - Cryptocurrency exchange and wallet service Bittrex has announced plans to launch U.S. dollar (USD) trading pairs for two new cryptocurrencies, according to an official announcement published August 8.

Per the announcement, Bittrex is looking to expand its fiat markets to Ethereum Classic (ETC) and Ripple (XRP) on August 20. The new trading pairs will be added to already listed dollar markets for Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Tether (USDT), and TrueUSD (TUSD).

4 - Tim Wagner, who had been the general manager of several Amazon Web Services business units including AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, and AWS Serverless App Repository, and also spent several years in various high-profile managerial positions at Microsoft, joined the Coinbase team on Monday. Tim Wagner will be “helping to create the world’s most open, secure, and accessible financial system”, according to his Linkedin profile. He is also responsible for hiring for engineering roles in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago.

5 - The South Africa Revenue Service (SARS) recently released a draft cryptocurrency tax legislation. The draft defines the framework of virtual currency taxation in the country.

In South Africa, the word “currency” is not defined in the Income Tax Act (the Act). Cryptocurrencies are neither official South African tender nor widely used and accepted in South Africa as a medium of payment or exchange. As such, cryptocurrencies are not regarded by SARS as a currency for income tax purposes or Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Instead, cryptocurrencies are regarded by SARS as assets of an intangible nature.
